I think a 10-year-old is probably ready for one of these -- and then if he's interested, once he reaches the age that he won't lose or destroy all of the parts, this. You can do a lot with that one if you have the knack. Turns out that I didn't, but I still enjoyed it. :)

Real easy to use, comes with a bunch of circuits to build, but leaves plenty open to exploration. Biggest thing is if you have a simple idea you can make it really fast and hassle free.
