I have a 2019. I bought the install kit for $160 on amazon. You have to be somewhat mechanically inclined because you have to remove the whole center console and part of the dash. There are some YouTube videos on how to do it.

The hardest part was the firmware upgrade. The installation of the hardware was easy. You can find the kits on Amazon now for about $165.

Hardware USB port + cables (installed after firmware updates), installation involves taking off most of the interior trim.

Android Auto (wired-only) + Apple Car Play. Planning on doing the updates tonight and swapping the hardware tomorrow.

Custom ROM for the CMU? Haven't looked into this one much because I'm less interested, but it includes wireless Android Auto as well as turns off the disclaimers and allows for touch while in motion.

There’s a CarPlay/Android Auto retrofit kit available that can either be installed at Mazda dealerships for $300-500 or the kit can be purchased online for about $150 and self-installed. The kit comes with a new usb hub to replace the one the car comes with and a new cable. I own a 2019 CX-3 Sport and just ordered the kit on amazon so I’ll be installing it with the help of a mechanic friend pretty soon.

I don't believe you can downgrade the firmware. Installing the version 70 first is a requirement for the "official" android auto. I paid $162 for the USB cables and dock ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07KRPSRKH ), and $10 for the trim kit ( https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01L8GHB7O )

There's a link to an 'hdrive' site, find the NA firmware, put them on a USB key (16gb or smaller) and follow the instructions to the letter. It's easy.

Then find the folder for the videos of the cable install, find the closest match to yours. Also easy.

Firmware took an hour (mostly sitting and waiting). Cables took an hour in my 2018 CX-5.

Both were easy as far as anything technical I've ever done. Very easy. Just take your time, follow each step carefully.

The Official Mazda upgrade requires New Hardware as well as New Flash from the Dealer. You can buy the part off Amazon for $162.

Another alternative is to Flash your Current Radio with Mazda AIO Tweaks which will give you the ability of Android Auto as well as a lot of other good stuff like Video Player etc. (Use at your own risk and Only supports certain firmware)

Someone at the "iA Society" facebook group has successfully installed Apple Carplay in the existing infotainment system. I believe you have to buy the Mazda Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Retrofit Kit to have Apple CarPlay. Android auto can be installed using Mazda AIO tweaks.
