Just want to add that Paul Elbourne has a short book called Meaning: A Slim Guide to Semantics and in the first chapter he argues that no one's ever been able to give a sufficient definition of any word. The first two chapters are up here if anyone's interested. IMO it's a well-written (and pretty funny) intro to Semantics.
Paul Elbourne's Meaning: A Slim Guide to Semantics is fun, simply-written, and a great way to start thinking carefully about language!
