Spiritual != religious.
Religion is man made. Man is inherently flawed.
There are sects within orthodox Christianity who believe punishing the flesh is part of a true religious experience (i.e., self flagellation). Supposedly this practice has died out but I think that mindset still persists.
If you are having a true spiritual experience through prayer, then what your body feels is irrelevant. It's not about your body. It's about transcending the physical to the spiritual; however, you accomplish this act. If a feeling of peace comes over your being during the experience, is that bad? I can't fathom how that could be a bad thing.
This is one of the best books I ever read about prayer / meditation but that's just my personal opinion.
