I started using a belt when I reached 300lbs deadlifts for reps and 2 plate squats for reps, though it isn't entirely necessary. It just feels more comfortable to do heavy sets with a belt.
I'm sure there are many people who hit 5 plate deadlifts and 4 plate squats without ever wearing a belt.

This is the belt I use. Doesn’t have to be anything super crazy. This belt has great reviews, and I absolutely love it as well.
As for when to start using a belt, it depends on the strength of your core and back. The more you use a belt, the more you potentially weaken these muscles because they aren’t handling as much of a load. I feel fairly comfortable up to 315, beyond that, I really like the extra support.

I'd take a look at this one. They are a small company that seems like they are just starting out. I bought one, and then got an email from one of the co-owners thanking me, and saying I have lifetime guarantee / free replacement on the belt, plus a 90% off any other products they make in the future. Right now, thats not many, but they just sent out an email to the registered customers saying they were making lifting straps and wrist straps as well soon, in addition to clothing. Really awesome customer service
The belt itself is solid. Feels (and smells nicely) like genuine leather. Not like that cardboard-y imitation leather you see some "leather" products are made of. Not to mention, when you order it, its not ultra stiff. I can take a picture of mine when I get home, if you want proof.
