Q: What is your setup?

A: Nexus 7 2013 with Timur's USB ROM. What this does is allows the tablet to turn on when it receives 5 volts, and go into a deep sleep (loses ~1% of battery per day) mode. Other stuff...

USB OTG Y-cable

DAC

Extension/angle adapter cable

Amp

Q: How did I fit it all?

A: lots of trimming. This is a project where every millimeter counts. If you could find a slimmer right-angle adapter that still has the OTG pin connected, you would be ahead.

Q: How is it mounted?

A: Plumbing strap with closed cell foam on the back, as well as a sheet metal bracket I made and then had powder-coated.

Q: Aren't you worried about it being stolen?

A: Nope. I live on campus at a university, where I live on the same level as the parking lot and typically park outside my window. This means my car is within 15 feet of my bed. I also made a magnetic delete plate, that I think helps a lot.

Q: Would I do it again?

A: While it is cool, and I'm glad that I did it... if I ever got another Miata, I would probably look into modding the stock radio to have an aux input, among other features.

Any other questions, please post them!

Equipment

  • Nexus 7 2013 w/ Timur's kernel (still in closed beta - open for donors)
  • Custom 3d printed housing
  • Alpine KTP-445U 4-channel Power Pack Amplifier
  • USB OTG Cable - Modified to fit
  • DC-DC Converter
  • Behringer UCA202 USB DAC
  • Bluetooth OBD2 Adapter - For getting real-time data into the Torque app
  • Add-a-fuse
  • Ground loop isolator ** Item still needs to be tested. This was purchased to hopefully eliminate a popping noise i get when first powering on the system

    Must Have Apps

  • GMD Gesture Control - Since i have no physical volume control buttons anymore GMD gesture control allows me to setup custom gestures like a 2-finger swipe to access volume control.

Very excited to be ~95% complete with the install. A couple things left:

  • pull out the double-din housing i made and put the top on it which also includes a fan
  • address a 'popping' sound when turning on the system. possibly caused by the amp turning on before everything else? still seeking a solution here

More than happy to try to answer questions for anyone else looking to do the same thing. Very happy with the outcome thus far.

I think you mean a USB OTG Y-cable? This one seems like a safe bet.

u/danrant · 4 pointsr/AndroidAnything

You are probably talking about USB Audio, it was actually added earlier in 4.1. The device also has to support USB Host. S4 does support USB Audio. The biggest problem is that Google does not give a damn about compatibility with external accessories. As far as I understand not all external USB Audio DACs/cards are compatible with all USB Audio Android smartphones.

EDIT: Here is what I think should work. Disclaimer: I'm not absolutely sure about compatibility.

The USB-OTG spec technically supports this, but most devices do not. You will typically need a custom kernel in order to enable this. I also don't know of any "reputable" manufacturers that a make a cable for this. I found this Y cable which has mixed reviews.

The Galaxy S8 with USB-C is better off though. You can use a hub like this to charge and use USB devices at the same time (and even output to HDMI if you want). Note that the S8 will only charge at the standard 5V/1.6A with a hub like this. Fast charging will not work.

u/njggatron · 2 pointsr/nexus4

The 3.5mm port doesn't support lineout, but the USB might.

You would need a cable like this.

Then you'd have to install ziddey's patch.

Here's a guide I found on Google for if you want to mount storage in the future.

However, I'm not sure if you DAC would be supported. Many DACs (at least, my FiiO E7) install their own drivers and some are plug-n-play. You might have to get a dock which plays audio over the USB port, and use that for lineout.

I don't know hardly a thing about this, but I might be able to somewhat help. Supposedly there are OTG "Y" cables that have a power-in USB port. Like this: http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Cable-Power-Samsung-AtomicMarket/dp/B009YPYORM

Then I imagine you just find any decent custom kernel, since OTG is probably a feature that's in high-demand, so any kernel dev wouldnt leave it out.

u/Mangetsu · 2 pointsr/Nexus7

Every OTG is compatible. I bought this one though IVSO

Some cheap cable worked too, just wanted to have more quality as I assumed the cheap won't be as durable or fast as this one.

Edit: A Y-Cable would be better on second thought. With this you can charge it and use it as OTG.

And if you have Mouse and Keyboard separate (I have both with one USB) you can buy something like this.

One side is for power insert, and the other for a connection to the phone, and the other for the standard USB.

Some devices do not allow power out and so you need to actually supply power to the phone and USB device.

I'm not sure if close to the samsung means it can't be a Nexus 7, (which has face recognition) or not but i recommend it. I personally use these:

Upvoted, but how is this different from a standard (USB OTG + Charging) cable?

I have heard hit or miss things about pairing bluetooth controllers to android devices in general.

I know you are looking for a cheap solution, but here is what I use

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00E6553PW

That allows you to hook up a wii u pro controller. IMO the pro controller is one of the best on the market right now, plus you can't beat the 80 hour battery life.

Also grab one of these

http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B009YPYORM/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1426861071&sr=8-1&keywords=otg+usb+with+power&dpPl=1&dpID=41%2BzgxysyJL&ref=plSrch&pi=AC_SY200_QL40

It lets you power the device while also using a usb controller or that adapter, which is almost needed for console mode.

I use these to get ethernet:

and

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F41TWAO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

Plug in the ethernet adapter to the OTG cable before connecting it to the tablet. Android should automatically connect, you'll see an ethernet cord icon in your status bar if it's working.

u/bobbyj023 · 1 pointr/running

You could use your phone but you'll need a special OTG connector to supply power and connect to your smartphone. I've done it with my 305, it's pain but doable with this android app.

u/Demons-With-Ryu · 1 pointr/theNvidiaShield

I assume you're referring to the K1 tablet. Yes, you can get an OTG cable that supports charging and connect it to a network adapter.

This two in combination work:

My phone crashed when I tried using an otg cable + SD card reader made for computers on it sooo your results may vary on that.

This is the first result I found in Amazon.

You might have some luck with this and a USB stick.

u/spunker88 · 1 pointr/AndroidQuestions

You can get the display via HDMI and use a USB mouse with OTG. This phone has webtop capabilities so that means it will have OTG, but it requires a charger be connected as well to power the OTG. So you'll need an OTG cable like this that accepts a charger:

http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Cable-Power-Samsung-AtomicMarket/dp/B009YPYORM

This is the one I use with my Droid 3 but you can find similar ones on eBay, etc.

Here's what I bought: http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Cable-Power-Samsung-AtomicMarket/dp/B009YPYORM/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

I don't remember what I used to root my phone. All I remember is that I had safestrap.

u/7DUKjTfPlICRWNL · 1 pointr/Android

I tried to use a USB OTG cable like this to connect a USB headset (also tested thumbdrive and mouse).

On my Nexus 6 - Didn't charge, but audio worked
On my Galaxy S3 - Charged and USB audio
On my Moto G 3rd Gen - Didn't charge, but audio worked.

I know USB 2.0 and USB OTG isn't the same thing as USB 3 and type C, but I assume/guess the software would have to support playing and charging.

u/tvtb · 1 pointr/Chromecast

I would love support for a wired ethernet adapter. They wouldn't even need to release any hardware; they'd just need to put in software support for the combination of this and this. This would be useful for anyone using the Chromecast in a business environment (where you care more about reliability), or even home users in crowded spectrum.

(So the question for them is, uh, think this might happen?)

Buy a 'Y-OTG' cable like this https://www.amazon.com/Micro-Cable-Power-Samsung-AtomicMarket/dp/B009YPYORM as suggested by josfr4ncisco. Connect both ethernet adapter and charger to it. It should give you both charging and network connectivity. Try it out.
