This is the general rule if using an "amplified" signal, say headphone out on iPhone --> RCA input on amplifier. The impedance of a line level output, which is what the DAC will use, is around 100ohms, with a peak-to-peak voltage of about 2v. It is constant and wont have a "volume" knob (which, btw, the Muse DAC doesn't).
Basically, yes, if you are connecting anything with an already amplified signal you want to reduce the volume to about 1/2 - 3/4; if you are using line level outputs, such as those found in CD players, some PC's, and any line-out adapter, etc. then it shouldn't make any difference as to what volume you set it at, because it should always be the same.

It sounds better/it's less noisy than the headphone output!
