A Mikrotik hAP AC would kick that Linksys' balls up between its teeth. For $115.

If you want to get some idea of just how badly it would fuck up that Linksys' world, take a look at these graphs of wired routing performance from an article I wrote for Ars Technica in 2016. This slide shows Mikrotik's hEX - basically the same hardware as the hAP, just without the wifi, at about $50 retail - dominating the mid-range router group. This slide shows the Linksys EA2700 utterly failing the hell out of life at the bottom of the low-end router grouping.

Granted, this is wired performance not wifi, and these are challenging tests. But, yeah, you're going to give up a lot going from Mikrotik hardware to lowball Linksys stuff. That silly-looking little Mikrotik dominated a Nighthawk R8000 that retailed for about $280 at the time, and still retails well over $200 now, even though it's already been obsoleted by the next model.

Damn I just took a look at this. The reviews seem amazing. Thank you for opening my eyes!

Apart from the UniFi gear you can also look at the mikrotik stuff.

This router is very advanced for the price point. Everything can be configured from the web config, a proprietary app, or even ssh or telnet.

For the AP you could use the hap ac if you want multiple ports, or they also make an AP that only has a single RJ45. They can be power by POE or a wall plug.

Here's a google image search of their webfig so you can get an idea of it.

This suggestion is depending on your skill. I've been very happy with Mikrotiks. Documentation isn't the best but its not bad at all. Plenty of helpful users out there if you have questions.

I will say, this is starting to step into the advanced user sort of platform. You're going to need to read and understand what you are doing. But if you need help, we are here and their forums are very active.

I'm currently using this Mikrotik. There are cheaper versions but this one suited my needs. Here is a non-wireless version in case you wanted to put in your own individual AP: hEX. Of course, this is assuming you have your own modem.

The biggest issue with a Linksys or Netgear SOHO-grade device is the complete lack of troubleshooting tools.

There are no meaningful logs to help you identify what is going wrong, or what is happening during a problem event.

DD-WRT, Tomato and OpenWRT all add a little more capability, but still don't add good logging.

You might have a look at MicroTik.

The little hAP ac has all the features you want at a fair price.

Don't fall into this fallacy. If you don't have data to steal, then they will infect your computers and use you as a launching-point for attacks on others, or install keyloggers on your systems to collect usernames & passwords to your gmail.

I'll look at the specs for your suggestions, but that last time I looked (a few years ago) there was nothing remotely affordable that has the features of Tomato or DD-WRT. Is this the Mikrotik box you were suggesting? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01BMMK4HI/ref=s9_acsd_hps_bw_c_x_3_w

Mikrotik AC Router. All I can say is do your research. Look for a router with a good chip and that can utilize good software.

there you go. no more shitty spider, spaceship looking routers.

As many have set get a travel router. If you are confident in configuring a more advanced router on the fly...

I use a RB962 ap as my travel router. https://www.amazon.com/MikroTik-RouterBoard-Triple-802-11ac-RB962UiGS-5HacT2HnT-US/dp/B01BMMK4HI/ref=sr_1_1/146-9760768-1114760

I usually pop one radio on the best wifi signal, nat and broadcast my own SSID for my devices. IF the room gives ethernet, I then use that over one radio on wifi. If it is complete crap I "charge" my phone off of it and use usb tethered data for things. Bonus, some places I go work at I have to test some optic, this lets me use fiber too...

Is the Mikrotik router hard to setup to get the fastest speeds? Im not the best with routers. Is this the product Where did you buy yours? https://www.amazon.com/Mikrotik-RB962UIGS-5HACT2HNT-RouterBoard-hAP-AC/dp/B01BMMK4HI

Probably a perceptible difference but only so if you look for it.

In 2-3 years people will move on to Wireless AX as a replacement for wireless AC and when that time comes you get to upgrade again (if you even care). Chances are in that time your uses will benefit more from extra bandwidth whereas right now it's just overkill

You won't be living with your current wifi for life. Also your current internet connection is likely a bottleneck (an AC Lite can reasonably do 300mbps over 2x2 - likely enough for most things and often faster than a person's internet)

One other consideration - https://www.amazon.com/MikroTik-RouterBoard-Triple-802-11ac-RB962UIGS-5HACT2HNT/dp/B01BMMK4HI

Swap out the router and one AP for one of those, it's a 3x3 device.

Just keep in the back of your mind that many people on this reddit overengineer things a dash (generally in the right direction of overengineering but it's still overengineered, just in more useful ways).
