I needed a boost of knowledge on something.
So i watched 2001 a space odyssey. After that I meditated with this:

This simulated the end scene where he was gaining all the knowledge and became the star child.

After that I drew that symbol and just wrote that poem. I then drew that symbol on an object I needed to help me.

As /u/linqua posted, you just experienced the Ganzfeld effect! Plus a little bit more.

There things called 'mind machines' and 'dream machines' which are specifically crafted for this kinda thing. They consist of glasses with LEDs on the inside of the lenses and headphones connected to a little piece of electronics which runs them.

I've always wanted to try one, and you might have just convinced me to buy one or maybe make one. It would actually be a relatively simple project:

Raspberry Pi or Arduino
Ping pong balls, stick some LEDs in them, would need an additional chip to connect the LEDs to to interface with the Pi or Arduino
Headphones
Put it all in a box and wire some potentiometers (variable resistor knobs) to the device
Relatively simple software to drive it all (including synthesizing the binaural audio, which is very easy, you just decide on your target frequency X and then generate two sounds with freq Y and Z where Y-Z=X, the offset creates low frequency oscillations which the brain allegedly syncs to) and receive input from the pots
Put it in a small box
