youll never get a clear answer on powering risers. mintcell has some good risers. just dont get SATA to molex, avoid that connection type unless you have enough molex connections to power the risers, 6 of them, and no more then 2 risers per cable from the psu. other than that your good with sata to 6 pin or straight sata on the riser board.

u/l80sman104 · 3 pointsr/EtherMining

I use these https://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B01GU94QSQ/crypto0dd-20. Just throw away the molex to sata adapters so you aren't tempted to burn your house down. Just connect them directly to the PSU.

You cam use the same powered risers for all of your slots, regardless of what size the slot is. You only need the 1x - 16x risers. A lot of people recommend ordering an extra riser or two just in case one is bad, though I have yet to receive a bad one myself, others have.

Panto makes good 006C ones if you want the 6 pin risers. No issues with them.

If you want the standard 006 risers, I've purchased some from MintCell on amazon (Usually the ones linked from a lot of guides) and also had no issues... those have the 4 pin molex. (Avoid using the SATA adapters if you can)

https://www.amazon.com/MintCell-6-Pack-Powered-Adapter-Extension/dp/B01GU94QSQ This is what I used. Make sure that you don't use the molex to SATA adapters though. Get some extra 6 pin to molex cables for your PSU so you can power the riser's molex connectors directly through properly rated cables.

Just a heads up. I have bought two different kinds of Risers from Amazon. Seems like there are two different kinds.

These ones seem like they are much higher quality. Bigger transistors on the board, 6 pin connection for the Sata power, and a much thicker USB cable. Roughly the same price.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071NMZSZ4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

These were the first ones that I bought. 2 were DOA. Order 4 more of the higher quality (IMO) for my rig.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01GU94QSQ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I would personally stay away from the bottom link ones. But I know there is a shortage, so you may have to get what you can.

Hope this was helpful.

These were the risers I used:

Which are pretty popular from the videos/tutorials I have watched.

  1. There are PCIe x16 to USB adapters out there: https://www.amazon.com/MintCell-6-Pack-Powered-Adapter-Extension/dp/B01GU94QSQ/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_147_bs_t_1?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=3X274PK32Q96PZ20SKPZ

  2. The CPU doesn't matter too much. You can get away with a cheapo Pentium or similar. It does matter to know how many PCIe lanes it has though. The Ryzen 3 would totally work, but it'll be a bit more power hungry than say an Intel Pentium or Core i3.

  3. You could wait for Ethereum's price to go down. Miners will stop purchasing GPU stock, but at that rate, it won't be cost effective to mine.

  • 007S uses a SATA power plug Link

  • 006C uses 6 Pin connector Link

  • 006 uses 4 Pin MOLEX Link

  • 005 shit it uses the Molex as well... hell I don't know. Disregard this research. Link

I used these ones: MintCell 6-Pack PCIe VER 006 PCI-E 16x to 1x Powered Riser Adapter Card But I think I read online that the blue/black boards are better... not sure.

I didn't use the sata to molex cables that are provided, and just plugged it in straight to molex from my PSU.

The risers come with a molex-sata power cable. Here's a link to the exact product if you need more info:

But I thought powered PCIe Riser are recommended just to help with power delivery (like this: https://www.amazon.com/6-Pack-Powered-Riser-Adapter-Extension/dp/B01GU94QSQ/ref=pd_lpo_147_bs_t_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=V2YYB6045DF8TF5FXWVE)

Sorry for not myself clear

I've been using these with good luck. I had one that didn't make it through the wave solderer correctly and had some bad solder joints on the power connection. I repaired it easily enough but Mintcell fired off a new one immediately anyway, so they take care of their customers well enough.

I have a friend who purchased the light blue slot with blue PCB like the one in the picture. Everyone came out defective.
I'm using the Mintcell, and all 6 i bought are working great. My friend purchased just one to try, and it works as well.

Hope this helps! Risers are always a hit or miss.

You need to build/buy a mining rig frame. You can check what other people did. Put the cpu, memory, cooler on the motherboard. Then put the motherboard and power supply on the frame. Give it a try before adding any gpu.

Then you add the risers, connectors. You cat try adding one graphic card boot and give a try to make sure it works. Then add the rest.

I don't think you need 2 psu. Each care will take max 150W, the mobo + cpu another 150. That's peaking to 1050 Watts. So one 1200 psu with plenty of connectors I think it's enough.

Regarding the risers you don't need the 16x to 16x. It's better to avoid the ones with ribbon cable. This type can be used also on pcie 16x slots(inserting them in the smaller part of the slot): https://www.amazon.com/6-Pack-PCI-E-Powered-Adapter-Extension/dp/B01GU94QSQ/

Ya I️ got the same bs concept different company...

Are the ones you got better?

I️ don’t really get the power sata tbh.
My RX 480 boots but not my Vega 56... going to switch the riser out in a min and see if that’s it.
