I wear 2 piece baggy bike shorts in the summer (a tight inner liner with padding + a baggy outer short), when its been below 40 this winter I've worn the same thing, but with a Merino wool base layer between the two layers. http://www.amazon.com/Minus33-Merino-Wool-706-MidWeight/dp/B0006FKJPU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1419014607&sr=8-1&keywords=merino+wool+base+layer
So the end result is wearing a pair of shorts with something that looks a bit like wool tights covering my lower legs. It looks a bit ridiculous but I'd really rather not wear jeans when biking except to stores/restaurants/etc. I see a decent amount of people here in New York doing something similar.
Hoping to get some insight on "thermal" wear. I never really venture off anywhere where the weather will be below 20* in the evenings but I do sleep cold. I was looking at the following product and wanted to know how you guys felt of if you had any reccomendations for other like brands.

SD's aren't the warmest pair of pants, I'd pick up a merino wool baselayer off Amazon, can find okay ones for like $50
You might want to try /r/BIFL or /r/GoodValue, but while I don't have any of these things, I hear wonderful things from outdoors loving friends about merino wool for warmth and durability (and also because apparently you can wear the merino for several wearings without washing)

I've been looking for merino wool long johns for myself and these seem to get good reviews.
