I would say go back to the styrofoam, but manually paint the pieces using an acrylic paint and a paint sponge. Make sure to buy extra paint in the colors you need for the pieces just in case you run out. You'll have to layer it multiple times since styrofoam is porous. Once your piece is evenly coated to your desire, use this mod podge evenly around your piece to get that lego shine. Once it's dried completely, go back over it with another even coat of mod podge if you feel like the finish is too dull or if there were any spot you've may have missed.
