"Rich white person" with a lot of crap from anthropologie chiming in. I'll explain this - note, some of this are going to sound shitty. Why? Because it is shitty. But I'm giving you the perspective of someone who shops at places like this and buys shit like that.

  1. Yesterday I bought this. Not quite an impulse buy, as I had seen it before, and had noticed it and am in the market for one of these, but I was passing by a West Elm and thought "fuck it." The entire trip in and out of the store took under 10 minutes. I knew I needed a console, I had seen it before, I was passing the store - I bought it.
  2. "Simplehuman" garbage cans - that are really boring and shitty, easily cost $100. They are the default sold at Bed, Bath and Beyond. I think they are ugly as fuck. We a small one in one of the bathrooms. Why? Because we need a bathroom garbage can and were shopping for that shit when we were at BB&B. I don't love it. However, it is the same one that you will see in half a dozen of our friends apartments. We actually have two of these ones, and I think they were pretty cheap - like $10 or 15 at homegoods. But the point is - go into one of my friends places, or my place, you will likely see Simplehuman garbage cans.
  3. That having been said, $100 is not only an established price range for a garbage can - we have established it is less than I'm willing to spend on a small piece of furniture if it fits with my aesthetic and it is for a piece of furniture I know I already need. I am not going to buy the first one I see - but if I've decided I need a garbage can, I may browse for a few weeks and then buy it when done browsing. That is what happened with the console, above. And, that having been said - I like Anthropologie's style. We have a fair amount of anthro stuff in our place - as well as vintage mid century modern furniture, new "mid-century style" furniture, some deco shit - whatever. It's a bit of a hodgepodge, but we make it work and have put effort into it. The point is, aesthetically, this anthro garbage can is way different looking than any of these. I like the flat top, I like that the sides are only slightly tapered, and I like the fact that the finished isn't that high gloss galvanized shit. I like the rope/leather handle, and I like the patina. You know what the difference is between the patina applied at anthro and the one you find on a 'vintage' garbage can? I am going to assume that the patina on the anthro one was applied in a factory and is not composed of literal filth, and an actual 'vintage' patina is 40 years of grossness I don't want in my house - especially not in my kitchen. Additionally, when you factor in the fact that I get discounts and points at Anthro, I have a relationship with their customer service department, and I am going to be ordering this shit from someone I've never heard at from Amazon, the fact it is a $70 price difference becomes the cost of an aesthetic choice - one I am perfectly happy to make in order to have something match my decor and for a purchase I don't plan on repeating again for 10 years. Quite honestly, the aesthetic differences between these garbage cans is no less meaningful than the aesthetic differences between iOS and Android. It is easy to love one and be driven mad by 80 central design decisions in the other that are borne right on the face of the product. Finally, could I find one like the anthro one for a lot cheaper if I am willing to look in vintage stores and antique shops? Yes - but I am a corporate lawyer. The value of time I would spend in the search for a can would so grossly outweigh the savings of just having the damn thing in my kitchen and close enough to my decor that I didn't have to worry about it that the $70 also just pays for a convenience cost instead of four weekends looking at garage sales and antique stores in putnam county - where it would likely wind up being $80 anyway.

So, yeah. That is how these things get sold. The extra $70 is being paid for in design to a brand I know and trust, matching an aesthetic I already have that, which while I could find for cheaper, it would take a lot of time to find a bargain, I have a relationship with their customer service and get bonus points and discounts, and while I doubt I would put one of the Amazon garbage cans outside - ironically, I'd want the cans out front to be super shiny and polished as shit, while the one in the house can have a patina - the anthro one is a definite maybe for indoor use. In the end, will I get it? Probably not. However, I do hate my current garbage cans. This is more my speed. Quite frankly, thinking it through, the fingerprints on that thing would drive me mad, and the patina on the anthro one won't show fingerprints at all...

Now, just to drive home what other kind of stupid shit I have here, I'm going to go blow out this absurd candle and turn off the LED grow-lamp facing my chocolate orchid and pitcher plant and then go to bed. This is what the houses are like of people who shop at anthro.

And before you downvote - I told you it would be shitty.

Dallas is hot right? Kratom plants love love love hot weather and sun. In Thailand they experience almost always above 70ºF. Maybe keep it inside while its little so that its roots can grow out. Since I assume it's really dry in Dallas you're going to have to water that baby all the time.

The growlight was relatively cheap and pretty good. Though I got to say it experienced a lot more growth now that summers hit and I've been able to keep it outside. I think this is the one I got.

Some 2 foot t5s from Amazon. With all the money I've spent buying single bulb ones I should have invested in one of the big fancy 4 bulb ones, or the big colorful LED lights like this. . :/ I have other succulents under the red/blue/purple LED light bulbs (like this ) and it's making their coloring so pretty. My previously all green succulents are getting more pink and purple coloring.

I really like this one. I have it on my avo tree now actually as well as a few others. I’ll say a prayer to the avo tree gods for ya!

u/mortarmanmike · 3 pointsr/SpaceBuckets

Thanks! I was actually tossing around the idea of using this for veg and this for flower

The goal is to keep the plant as short as possible during the vegetative state which is why I was going to go for the blue LED. I've also read that red lights help the flower stage which is why I am leaning towards the second one. As far as addressing the heat, I was probably going to drill a few holes above the bulbs so air can pass through, cooling them.

Can't wait to begin planting.

I just bought this:

Another Reddit user on here recommended it. I can't remember which post it was under though. I got the 4ft one with two bulbs for $66.

I also have two of these which seems to work well too. I think it brings out the stress coloring in my plants

I forgot to mention that I think its totally neat that you did this. It's a good experiment.

I don't have one I'd recommend but I'd avoid another eBay bulb - maybe this one instead? It seems to have good reviews and it's not too expensive.

Daylight CFLs put out a good spectrum for plants and you'll probably always get good results using one, but LEDs are awesome because you can consume far less power and put out the absolute most effective spectrum for plant growth. I don't know whether you'll necessarily get better results with the LED than the CFL but you'll certainly be able to get comparable results.

led
+lamp

May work better than those small lamps, the led bulb got really good reviews so is proven, and also the lamp was just personal because i think architect lamps ar too damn beautyfull to pass the chance to put one in a desk. So that combination would provide good light to ur plants, but mostly check for what u like lamp wise, just know that led bulb is advised widely on amazon compared to those lamps u linked.

u/ToBePacific · 3 pointsr/Bonsai

I've heard good things about Brazilian rain trees. I love tropical trees in general for the fact that they're able to survive winters indoors. As you know, Zone 5 winters are a beast and a half. Coming home to a house full of greenery really takes the edge off of February.

I picked up one of these lights a few years back. What I've found is that with the supplemental light on one plant, the leaf stems stay short and compact and the leaves themselves don't become too large. But it doesn't seem to do much for encouraging growth, compared to when they're out in full sun in the summertime.

So this year I'm trying to see how they all do in the windowsills without any extra lights. I predict that they'll get long and leggy, but I really don't mind that for now. In the spring I'm gonna give them all haircuts anyways.

u/CptNasty · 3 pointsr/SavageGarden

I don't think any LED would do and unfortunately the ones I ordered a year ago are no longer available. But I bet you get better bang for your buck now.

I'd be happy to offer a couple humble suggestions if you can answer a couple questions.

Are you fine with the light being purple, or would you rather have white light shining on them? I went with red/blue LEDs but now I kind of wish I had gone with fluorescent lighting to better enjoy my plant's natural beauty.

I'm thinking about expanding my grow area and I'm seriously considering going with fluorescent and putting my "prize" plants there and using the LEDs for cultivation.

TL;DR- You can compare something like this to this

First is $19 and could probably do the job for a couple plants. Second is on sale for $29 and could probably do 3-4 times the area but I'm bad at math.

I don't necesarilly recommend those models specifically, but with the links others have provided and these examples that should give you something of an idea of where to start comparing.

This is a lamp I bought last winter that did a good job for a handful of plants to keep them growly normally through the winter: http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GNWK2XO?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

I bought the clipped bulb socket too, and had the light about 2ft above my plants, it covered about a 2'x2' area effectively. I'm actually getting ready to set it up in my apartment with a rack for this winter (had it at my office last year).

u/Eenjuneer645 · 2 pointsr/Hydroponics

The chips on that bulb look digitally manipulated. OP, this is the one I used for my grow experiments with relatively high success. You will need 2-4 depending on how big of a grow you want. Unfortunately the price tag is par for the course with any reputable product like these.

u/O-o-_-o-O · 2 pointsr/IndoorGarden

You can still grow those, but you'd have to buy a couple LED grow lights (here's the one I use). That's how I grow my peppers indoors year-round :]

u/legalpothead · 2 pointsr/trees

Get an LED grow light on it. You want the light close, maybe 4" from the tops of the leaves. This light can supplement the natural light.

u/ColeTheSoul · 2 pointsr/succulents

Yea I have a cheap 12 Watt LED grow bulb. It seems to be doing a pretty good job, you just need a large fixture for it since it is very large. Amazon Link

u/imadogbark · 2 pointsr/houseplants

Thank you! Mine started to bloom like mad once I started using this LED grow bulb. I have it positioned about 4' away from my lily, and it loves it! It also sits next to a shaded window, in the shade of my M. Deliciousa and gets watered once a week when it starts to droop a bit. :-)

u/PoliteLittleLover · 2 pointsr/succulents

This past winter was my first time using grow lights, and I had a good experience with this one. I kept it ~6 inches above my plants, and ran it 15 hrs/day. Some people might recommend a higher wattage (=more intense light), but the 12 watt option was a good fit for me, considering the price and duration that I needed them (only a couple months).

It's warming back up where I live now, so I've actually packed away the grow lights & moved all my plants back outside. Good luck!

u/JebBoosh · 2 pointsr/orchids

I built my light using leftover parts i had from building a light for my saltwater reef aquarium. I knew that if the light i built for my aquarium was strong enough to grow the specific coral i wanted to grow, a similar light would be more than strong enough to grow any kind of plant. I've gotten tomatoes to flower and set fruit with this light. I used 24 3w cree LEDs (this was several years ago though, and LEDs have vastly improved since then). I currently only have 12 of the LEDs turned on, and the fixture is mounted about 5 feet above the orchids (phals, cattleyas, oncidiums, and a maxillaria), hanging from the ceiling using one of the hanging kits from rapidled.com

Do you just have one orchid?

I wouldn't get that $70 light on Amazon. There is no real reason to get a "full spectrum" light because plants primarily only use red and blue light (which is why most LED grow lights only have red and blue LEDs).

If you only have one orchid, I would just get something like this and get some kind of cheap fixture to mount it in, like a shop light from home depot.

What kind of orchids are you trying to grow and how many do you have/want?

u/strawberberry · 2 pointsr/succulents

I've had great success with it once I got the hang of it. I have two of them on a timer for 15 hours a day (since it is summer) and my plants are super happy. They don't get really any light besides that from the grow lights and I have almost 0 etiolation except on the props that stay on the wrong shelf for too long. https://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics-light-Hydropoics-Greenhouse-Organic/dp/B00GNWK2XO

The larger light I'm honestly not sure. After we legalized I bought it as part of this kit a hydro store in Maryland had put together, and just came in a unmarked box as part of a larger wholesale shipment I imagine.

The entire kit was like $325 or something and I remember the light being a little less than half of that, so it's likely comparable to other $150 or so full spectrum LED's, you can also control whether it's just blue/red/or both.

It's a small scale grow.

Of course it can get expensive, but there are alternative routes to take to cut costs and make your own work for you.

You're growing a relatively large scale where I'm talking about small grow operations for single person uses.

Based on my experience over the past 4 years, still learning so if anyone has advice throw it my way too:
I grow bell peppers and jalapeño indoors next to a south facing window. The ones that dont fit next to the window I put an led growlight on every other plant (below). They need at least a 5 gallon pot each- though Ive experimented with stunting them in smaller pots to get cutes tiny peppers with much success. Grab some liquid fertilizer- dilute in and use it as directed for containers. If it doesnt specify containers then I dilute it 10x the recommendation. Do not use fertilizer spikes. They have killed too many of my plants.

u/chiirioz · 1 pointr/orchids

Nah - I am from the NE region with a radiator that just makes my apartment wildly dry and hot in the winter. I leave the window open a crack because my dog would just be miserable.

I usually move my more moody plants (usually species phals and other kinds of orchids) but my hybrid NOID phalaenopsis don't seem to mind a cold draft blowing on them - they are so much more hardy. During the summer months, I don't see this being an issue but when it gets to like 10F, I will close the window or move it inside more. I am lucky to have South-facing windows though.

I bought a grow bulb from Amazon that fits into a standard lamp. You can use it to supplement light on gloomy days since a North-facing window may not be enough light.

I would say, keep it away from the window and slowly move it closer since it will need some time to acclimate to a new apartment, then to a drafty window.

u/paradoxbomb · 1 pointr/aquaponics

Strawberries need full sun for 8 hours a day to thrive and bear fruit. Any extra sunlight you can give them will help, but grow lights are really the best option for anything indoors.

I've grown dwarf tomatoes indoors with these 12W bulbs: https://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics-lights-Hydroponics-Greenhouse-Organic/dp/B00GNWK2XO. Total cost: $25 - $30 for the bulb and a clamp fixture. Power use on the 12W bulb costs maybe 50 cents per month. If you can swing it, the 36W full spectrum bulb produces a less obnoxious light color. Add an $8 timer and you barely have to think about it.

u/Master_of_Fail · 1 pointr/indoorgardening

If you do some digging you can get away with LED lighting for under $50 as long as you're not looking to light a whole lot of large plants. Most LEDs are set to the blue/red spectrum so you're not wasting energy on wavelengths the plants aren't using. That and the fact that they're LEDs means that you'll only end up spending a couple of extra bucks a YEAR for most lights. I wouldn't worry about that part too much.

I would suggest investing in a timer as well. A cheap $10 would do the job. That way you don't have to worry about forgetting to turn them on in the morning or anything like that.

https://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics-light-Hydropoics-Greenhouse-Organic/dp/B00GNWK2XO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1478452634&sr=8-3&keywords=led+plant+light

The first looks better, but the other two look more convenient and they're a lot cheaper. I'm not sure how much I need, the most important plants are two in 4" pots and three in 2.5". It doesn't seem like I would need a vey big setup.

This was my first one and if you put it high enough you could cover that many, depending on pot sizes. It's very strong even from several feet away according to my light meter, but I have mine maybe 2feet above 2 plants.

I use larger more expensive ones to cover more space.

As I said, it depends on your budget. Both for the fixture and for the running cost. Some people don't care about running cost because they get their electricity for free (solar). So LED makes more sense for them. Or perhaps they are concerned about heat buildup. Or they need a very specific spectrum of light.

A lot of people on Amazon like this one: https://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics-Miracle-Hydropoics-Greenhouse-Organic/dp/B00GNWK2XO/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1465922549&sr=8-4&keywords=lumigrow

But you'd need quite a few of them to cover an area for 40 plants for 2 months. And I doubt they last more than a couple seasons for you. But I could be wrong. There's a lot of trash fixtures coming out of China right now, so I typically stay away from the more "retail grade" units and stick with the commercial models.

u/FindingLooking · 1 pointr/hydro

Thanks! That's exactly the kind of information I was looking for.

What about an LED bulb that would fit into a clamp light, like this one:

http://www.amazon.com/TaoTronics-Miracle-Hydropoics-Greenhouse-Organic/dp/B00GNWK2XO/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1462306812&sr=1-1&keywords=led+grow+bulb&refinements=p_72%3A2661618011

I figure if the purple light is driving us crazy, we could always swap it out for a CFL and not be down too much money.

Thanks again!
