I installed soft close cabinet door dampers on my cabinets. They seemed kind of chintzy when I got them, but they've worked great.

on my staircase

Lubricating door hinges. They say to use plumbers grease because it's odorless and colorless. You don't want to be using WD-40 or you'll stink up your whole house.

Preset Countdown Timer Switch for Bathroom Exhaust Fan

New top and bottom shocks on my glass storm door.

Leak detectors under all toilets. It's better than noticing when the water is an inch deep.

Congratulations! I became a dad over the summer and remember the dark hallway walks well. Do yourself a favor and pick up a set or two of these motion sensing lights. They're really nice and result in far fewer stubbed toes.

I'm a big fan of the company Mr. Beams. I have this light which does a great job at illuminating an entire staircase mounted on the wall near the top step. But I have two young dogs. For an older dog you'd probably want to put a few down the staircase.

A family member has this one which works really well for them on their outside steps.

Are you talking about these? I just got some Mr. Beams motion sensing lights for my closet, and they work pretty nicely. Mr. Beams also makes these night lights. I imagine they should be good.

Otherwise, I'd go with /u/fivethirds's suggestion. I personally have some GE branded version of those, and I like them. As (s)he said, they're basically just like a giant indiglo watch face. There is literally just enough light to not step on something, and nothing more.

I got a set of these: http://smile.amazon.com/Beams-Battery-Powered-Motion-Sensing-Stick-Anywhere-Nightlight/dp/B002FCGI8Y/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1395624431&sr=8-2&keywords=mr+beams

they work great. very wide angle of sensitivity, won't come on if the lights are on, batterys are supposed to last a year under normal use.... stick on or screw on...

There are tons of motion activated battery LED lights out there. This type would work if you don't want to bother with turning them on or off ever.

We have these and they work great. They shine the light down so they illuminate the stairs without blinding you at night. Batteries last a month or more with cheap rechargable AA cells. I'm sure they've saved us several falls.

I have one of these in my bathroom, perfect at night, doesn’t wake me up and auto on/off. http://www.amazon.com/Beams-Battery-Powered-Motion-Sensing-Stick-Anywhere-Nightlight/dp/B002FCGI8Y

Something like these, but for glass display cabinets in a university setting. LED strips are the current avenue, but there are a lot of problems with connecting them together and making them convenient to turn on and off.

Thank you for your thoughts!
