An OS that works with software it is compatible with. Although, my OS works just fine. Windows 8.1 has never crashed for me, if it did I would switch to Ubuntu. Haven't had to do that yet, though ;)

I'm just happy I didn't have to pay a $1500 premium for the privilege of not being able to use a large chunk of the software out there. Oh but I did miss out on a cutesy case design, poor me.

Just got one of these.

Like a champ. It is my second msi. You don't need to spend alienware money to get good performance.

My personal recommendation, though it's well under your price range. With gaming laptops there's a spectrum between high powered desktop replacements (huge and bulky) and compact laptops that also play games. I feel like the laptop I linked strikes a good balance and sits on the price to performance sweet spot.

the GT70 if you don't mind a huge laptop and you insist on spending more money. This is close to the best money can buy without dishing out 50% more for a name brand like Alienware. As you can see I'm a MSI fanboy :D

So you're looking at an MSI GP70 and an MSI GE70?

They are both bad, honestly. Poor quality products that are really flimsy and run quite hot. I would stay away from anything below the GT or GS series MSI laptops.

Also, for school, don't go with a 17.3" laptop. They are huge and can be a bitch to take around and get through classes with. They occupy a lot of space. I'd suggest going with the Lenovo Y50 if you want to get the performance of the 2nd laptop for the price of the first one, all while being much higher quality in every way and being WAY more portable.

Alienware is typically over priced in almost everything they make. (they typically sell more towards the transitioning console peasants who don't feel like doing research/don't care about good deals). So bang for your buck isn't really Alienware. Now for the Lenovo Y50. It is a very good deal and there are many reviews on youtube for it but for gaming at $1000 you can get a much better hard drive and maybe some more RAM (doesn't really matter past 8 for today's gaming atm though), I'm actually receiving my new Y50 on Monday and for a $900 budget it CANNOT be beat currently. Surprisingly enough though the extra $100 you're throwing in (or thereabouts) actually gives you a lot of leeway. MSI and ASUS for gaming in the $1000 or higher range IMO is the way to go. CPU's for this price range will not vary much if at all in performance. And the 860m is pretty much the sweet spot for GPU's at $900 to $1100. If you feel like comparing performance of GPU's and CPU's you can always use http://www.passmark.com/index.html But other than those the hard drive space and speed and screen size would be the deal breakers for me anyways. So just look around and see what you like. Hope this helped!

Edit: Forgot to add, that if you're looking to run all the new games at High or Ulta @60fps then 970m GPU or higher is definitely the way to go.. That being said though you're looking at a minimum of a $400 - $600 price bump. The 860m will run most new games with High settings or even Ultra (in less frequency nowadays) @ 30-60 fps. Also these websites can be good for looking at Gaming Laptops http://www.xoticpc.com/index.html http://www.newegg.com/

Very similar needs to this, though I don't care where I buy from. Currently looking at the Lenovo Y50, but concerned with the hybrid SSD/HDD and the quality of the 4GB video card.

Kinda hate to make another thread when I'd just be filling out the same document.

I don't like the 850m card, hoping for a little more bang for my buck.

Thoughts about the MSI GE70? http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GE70-Apache-Pro-012-17-3-Inch/dp/B00IMTQ5I2/ref=psdc1_t1_B00IMTQ3UW_B00IMTQ5I2

Ok in that case check out this: http://amzn.to/1NxIQ5F Or http://amzn.to/1F0A38u (both are $1000 but you can't really get a better one that can be portable as the higher end stuff becomes isn't "portable".

MSI GE70 Apache Pro, I would get 100+ frames on league while recording and overwatch ran at 60 frames on medium/high. I'm selling one RN if you want to PM me, if not here's a link to the amazon page.https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/social/swf/B00IMTQ5I2/o=ShareProduct/ref=tsm_1_aw_swf_d_sp?vs=1.

u/FPKorea · 1 pointr/PhantomForces

If you play Battlefield 4, why do you even play Phantom Forces? Also, the sudden lags and crashes DO get caused by small amount of RAM memory. Let me give you a example: Let's say you have the exact same model as the one on the main thread. And let's say you played Minecraft and blow up like 1000 TNT'S at once. What do you think it will happen? With a RAM that small and a freaking 2.5Ghz processor won't be able to process and handle that much of memory processing. Thus, it would crash. Same goes for explosions and suppressions in Phantom Forces. When a enemy shoots you with a M60, there would be so much big suppressions that the small RAM and the 2.5Ghz processor won't be able to handle the sudden shaky camera movement. Which would create big sudden lag and even crash. It would be a lot different if the ROBLOX engine uses the computer's GPU to process the game's memory, which would result in much smoother and faster gameplay on bad computers. If you really get 50~60 FPS on BF4, prove it. Maybe record a video or something. I'll also give you the link of the same MSi Gaming laptop here. http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00IMTQ5I2/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1451094280&sr=8-1&keywords=msi+ge70&pi=SX200_QL40&dpPl=1&dpID=413nfx6nSGL&ref=plSrch

I have one of these that I don't use much anymore if it's in your budget. You can PM me if you're interested. Mine is the i7 860m 12gb ram. Does have a single red pixel in the top right corner, but 9/10 times it goes away a few minutes after turning on the laptop or poking it.

MSI Gaming G series GE70. If you can find one with similar specs you should be OK on medium. I've played on this laptop for months before going to a Desktop and it worked great. Make sure it's plugged in or it will go into power saving mode and the performance will suck. I've provided a link but you might want to check the specs and see if there is another machine out there that can give you more for your money. If you can get a desktop do it. You'll get better performance for the money. But as someone that has both I still jump on my laptop as much as my PC to play Ark.

$12,000? I'm pretty sure that's a typo hehe.

Go with this. Has a dedicated 850M and a top of the line processor.

Go with this if you for sure need the stronger graphics and don't mind giving up weight.

So for the same price as the Y50 and new screen I could get this:

http://www.amazon.com/MSI-GE70-Apache-Pro-012-17-3-Inch/dp/B00IMTQ5I2

Is this MSI the same or better than the Y50?

u/MintyLotus · 1 pointr/SuggestALaptop

Looks pretty decent. What do you think of it in comparison to the MSI GE70 Apache Pro-012? This one is a bit larger, but does have pretty nice features (as far as I understand it)

Is the laptop you have this by chance? I was considering getting it for the rift as well, would I regret it?

Asus G500JK (i7-4700HQ, 860M, 12GB RAM, 1TB HDD, 17.3" screen)

Asus N500JK (i7-4700HQ, 850M, 16GB RAM, 240GB SSD, 15.6" screen)

MSI GE70 Apache (i7-4700HQ, 860M, 12GB, 1TB HDD, 17.3" screen)

You're going to have some trouble locating a 16GB + 860M laptop. The problem is the 860M is a mobile GPU that is geared towards the gaming market, while 16GB of ram is usually reserved for "business class" laptops.

You can of course shop around for better pricing in your area, but these were the three off the top of my head. I believe the Lenovo Y50 has some options in your price range, but only ship with 8GB of RAM. You can, of course, upgrade it yourself as most of them can upgrade to 16GB with another purchase.

[ ASUS ROG G750JM-DS71 - $1,349 ] - 12GB of 1600Mhz RAM, 1TB 5400RPM HDD, GTX860M, 9.9lbs

[ MSI GE70 Apache Pro-012 - $1,299 ] - 12GB of 1600Mhz RAM, 1TB 7200RPM HDD, GTX 860M, 5.95lbs

Looks like the GE70 is the better deal currently. Both are Prime-compatible, so they should have quick shipping times.
