I tend to visualize a troll as something vaguely like this, which is hanging out under a bridge. You, the unwary traveller, are crossing this bridge of knowledge, but the troll throws something shiny in an effort to attract passersby into looking at them, distracting you from real knowledge and instead leading you off the path to wade through some troll dung as you trudge back onto the path upon realizing you've been trolled.
