Forgive me while I rage for a minute over your post. You are correct: Theseus did all of these things. However, your context is incorrect. Theseus wanted to be a hero, so instead of taking the safe and quick route by water, he decided to go the dangerous way to prove he was a badass. You also neglected to mention that the people he "beat the crap out of" on his way to Athens were bandits. Three of the most notable were: Sciron- he would make the people he captured kneel to wash his feet, and while knelt, he kicked them off a cliff to feed his giant pet turtle; Sinis- he would fasten people to two pine trees bent towards one another and then release one, ripping the people in half; Procrustes- he would measure people against his bed, and if they were too tall he would cut parts of their bodies off until they fit, and if they were too short he would stretch them. Did I mention that he killed these guys the way they killed their victims?
The only reason he offered himself as a tribute to the Minotaur was to make the people of Athens loyal to him, as he was to be their king's heir. Ariadne fell madly in love with him, and the only reason he left her on Naxos was because Dionysus decided he wanted her for himself. One does not contradict a God.
You are correct about forgetting to change the sails- I'd also like to add that the king's name was Aegeus, and the sea into which he threw himself is now known as the Aegean sea.
After returning to Athens, Theseus relinquished all of his titles except for that of Commander in Chief, and allowed Athens to become the most prosperous of city-states, and the only place in the world where the people governed themselves.
Theseus was also widely sought-after for advice. Oedipus came to Theseus after his exile, and Theseus comforted him until his death. He also entrusted Theseus with the safekeeping of his two daughters. and the Seven Against Thebes came to Theseus, who then led an army against Thebes to force the burial of the dead. After conquering Thebes Theseus did not allow his forces into the city, so they would not rape or pillage or burn. Also, Theseus was the only person to stick by Hercules after he went crazy and killed his family.

TL;DR- Theseus was a badass, but not the dick ZoneGuy0 made him out to be.

I read one about a year ago. Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes by Edith Hamilton. It was a good collection of a bunch of Greek myths and a comprehensive read. It is arranged nicely, covering most major gods and goddesses and a few minor ones. Overall a very sensible and very readable collection of myths. Hope this helped!
