My son had trouble sleeping at that age. He went to sleep fine, but would wake between 2am-4am and wouldn’t go back to sleep. The thing that worked the best was outside time for 3+ hours with lots of running. I’d take him on a walk and we’d stop at the park and I’d chase him around. Then we got a trampoline and that helped a lot. Mental fatigue works too. Trips to the store, library or mall would seem to stimulate him and tire him out (but not in a meltdown way).
Lately he spends his afternoons with the wand sprinkler watering the trampoline and him jumping for hours.
Around the same time I read autistic people tend to have magnesium deficiency. I had him checked, but the pediatrician checked blood levels and the article(medical journal) mentioned levels needed checked from stool/urine. So I bought these supplements and everyone noticed a difference. More eye contact, better focus and less escaping. It helped with sleeping for a week or so, and then he would repeat. Looking back, I’d say it was a growth spurt combined with allergies/colds from pre-k and not enough physical or mental stimulation.
Now at 5.5yo, if he wakes and sees it’s still dark outside he will get back in bed. It’s glorious.
It surprisingly gives you good sleep at night and lots of energy through the day.
