I had the same exact thing happen. I used a manual breast pump for a few mins before the feeding. The suction made the nipple something my LO could latch. Honestly, I use this thing every single day, it’s a lifesaver for a million reasons! I now buy one for all of my expecting friends.

The Haakaa. It’s like, a suction cup for your nipple, that you can use while baby nurses on the other side. It catches any milk that drips out! It’s so useful for when you’re really engorged on both sides in the morning but you don’t want to lose any precious milk. I got two ounces out of it this morning.

Had an emergency c-section and had no trouble breastfeeding. I ended up with an over-supply though and painful engorgement. I would highly recommend these... I used them on the side opposite where my son was feeding to collect leaking milk (usually 1-2oz each feed would just leak out!). They were so handy, not painful at all, and a big relief for clogged ducts. I got a couple of those silicone suction cup "pumps" and I'd slap one on whichever side baby wasn't currently nursing. It was just enough to take the pressure off, but not actually pumping and increasing supply. I slowly built up a teeny freezer stash that way, too. Now, 6 months out, I throw one in my purse if we go out on a date night or something just in case I start feeling too full. Somewhere around $12 on Amazon.

While your LO one is nursing on the right you would suction this to the left and your sympathetic let down will supposedly get you a little bit with each feeding. I haven't actually tried it, but I learned about it today.

Yes, I had the same thought. I've also heard from multiple people that pumping is a huge pain because you have to steralize all these parts. The manual one seems much simpler. Plus this one is only $12 on Amazon and people seem to love it. I feel like it would be worthwhile to at least try it out. Good luck to us both!!

Just gonna throw out some things that I wish I'd had locked and loaded:

A ton of Epsom salt for baths (helps nether regions recover, also great for a relaxing bath for mental health and sore muscles from baby holding). You can make a little spa kit or something if you want, maybe with wine and a face mask or something.

A haakaa or similar. So much easier than a pump, made annoying unused boob letdown less messy, easier to start storing some milk, lifesaver when you suddenly find yourself engorged, easily portable, no power source needed. Baby wrap or carrier! I can actually survive and feed myself and whatnot without leaving the newborn to scream. Plus he falls asleep well in it and we get to bond. Maybe find a cute one that she'll enjoy, because it covers a lot of your clothes so if she cares about what it looks like keep that in mind.

My family is nearby, but my husband works away so a lot of the time I'm on my own with bub. I'm 9 weeks in now, and my suggestions would be:

• Buy a haakaa pump (I have this one). They're super cheap, silicone hand pumps that suction onto your boob. My friend lent me hers and I bought my own soon after because it was so useful. I'd say it's useful regardless of how long you breastfeed... when my milk came in I had major issues with engorgement, and it helps to relieve that pressure. I also use it to catch the letdown from one boob while I feed from the other, and consistently get about 4-5 oz of passive milk collection overnight, which is enough for one bottle per day. An easy, painfree way of building up your supply, or enabling your SO to feed the baby once a day.
  
  
• Buy yourself snacks that are easy to eat one-handed and don't require heating or preparation. There were days in the first few weeks where I just ate weetbix breakfast biscuits, up-n-go, yoghurt pouches, bananas, etc. You need the fuel to feed your baby, but your baby will probably do everything in their power to keep you from eating ;)
  
  
• Get a good water bottle and travel mug. I love the contigo ones because they can be operated one-handed.
  
  
• Woolies online ordering is a life-saver. I've tried food shopping in person, but when bub is too small you won't want to put them in the infant carrier on the trolley, and there's only so much you can carry when pushing a pram or baby-wearing. I'd suggest signing up for the delivery saver if you think you'll shop once a week or more.
  
  
• My baby has been a pretty good sleeper (terrible napper though), but sleep deprivation was still rough. I found the first few weeks to be the hardest: feeds take longer, and you aren't used to being awake at 1am. But just be patient with yourself. I found that I drifted off a fair bit in the early weeks, but now I'm awake for the whole feeding and don't start to nod off. It's hard, but it does get easier.

I personally went with the knock off brand as it had really good reviews on amazon and I love it. Highly recommend and then you may be able to do both. I also bought a good electric pump used as you can buy all the attachments new and therefore just the electronics are used.

Get a Hakka (I use this one) and use it on the breast the baby isn’t nursing on. It not only collects the run off milk from your letdown (hello early start on a milk stash!), but also the suction helps to pull extra milk off and relieves the pressure from the enforcement. (Especially helpful if baby only nurses one side at a time.)

I got a manual pump. So far I used it while on one boob while he’s nursing on the other. Works better than my electric pump!

Echoing others who said that you're never really empty!

This time around I got a silicone suction pump (haaka is one brand, I got this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LZ2ZVCY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_TWfezb0MRJH8X). I attach it to the side she's not nursing on, and there is still plenty left for her to eat even after collecting 1-2 oz. It's been awesome, and so much less hassle than breaking out a regular pump!

I figure if I get maybe 2 oz a day for a few weeks, that will give me a nice little stash for when I go back to work. For my first I never had a huge stash, and it wasn't really necessary. Having a few oz in the freezer will be a nice cushion just in case!
