The trilogy finds Powell, an attorney who has seen better days, arrested for the murder of a Federal Agent. Not just her murder, but dissection as well. Powell is ultimately sentenced to a penal colony that is not in a remote location, but rather in a remote time (the distant future when all humans have died off). This is New Alcatraz.

Powell strives to find out why he was framed for murder, but to do that he must find a way to travel back to before the murder took place.
