Why the feck do you need to go to africa for?

Go buy the complete book of Self Sufficency by John Seymour.

You can do it on 5 acres. And 5 acres in rural anywhere in the middle of nowhere is cheap.

John Seymour has pretty good ideas for one acre and five acre homesteads, and this book is what made my wife and I take the leap...

Get this book: The complete book of self-sufficiency. Taught me everything I need to know about farming. If you're looking for affordable and vast amounts of land I suggest having a look at Brazil. One thing: Killing wild animals is forbidden (except in cases of essential food supply or self defense) and for fishing you need a permit (but that's easily obtainable).

Yeah, they would totally become self sufficient. They would essentially need to follow this book http://www.amazon.com/The-New-Complete-Book-Self-Sufficiency/dp/0751364428

Your home: There is no one correct kind of home you must build, everyone has their own needs and limits. But you must think carefully about what you want to prioritise. A basement or root cellar is excellent for any kind of long term storage. Consider building a Rocket mass heater, it’s a type of a fireplace that burns wood extremely efficiently, and pipes through a large thermal mass where it will release heat over a long period of time. Google for more info. This is also good time to mention that when the time comes you might want to get an axe and learn to cut wood, it’s difficult and dangerous, but also fun and rewarding. Chainsaws are easier of course, but nothing will make you feel as manly and independent as being able to cut wood with your own hands.

If you live in a forest fire prone area, take measures to avoid having your home burn down but cutting down any tree that could spread the fire to your house, keep your lawn hydrated, and maintain your local woods by removing fuel from the ground.

For further info look for blogs, videos, and books about homesteading.

Depending on your location and situation, different books might be more helpful than others.

I assume you are wanting to start homesteading because you are trying to be more self-sufficient, even if it means just growing one thing you use to buy.

If you are fortunate enough to own land, there is essentially only one book I can recommend (owning it myself)

  • The New Complete Book of Self Sufficiency by John Seymour

If you don't want to be a real prepper, ie. go completely off-grid

  • Practical Self Sufficiency by Dick Strawbridge

Also, @StolidSentinel 's list is a very good start. Even if you rent you can still grow food.

There a million other books out there, but these ones should provide you with enough knowledge to hopefully make a success of your homesteading dreams.

Seems to be mostly birch?

Looks lovely anyways. Would also recommend Ash and Eucalyptus, both good for coppicing and make good firewood.

If you don't already have it, would recommend this excellent book.

Believe it also covers drainage of land.
