Well, if you want to play a Pokemon game and learn more about it, you could always buy a 3DS or 2DS and pick up one of the newer games, but if you don't have the money, then you could always play a rom or watch a playthrough on YouTube.

Here's a couple pretty cheap listings for a console and all of the newer games (Gen 6) if you're intirested: 2DS

Pokemon X

Pokemon Y

Pokemon Omega Ruby

Pokemon Alpha Sapphire

But, like I said, if you're not interested in spending money, there's lots of free options to learn about Pokemon as well.

There's one more resource I'd like to link, here's the official Pokedex, so you can see and learn about every Pokemon, old and new: Pokedex

If you can afford it, go for the newest model, the Nintendo New 3DS XL, priced at $275 retail, right now, with some being on sale for $200.

If not that and it's way too pricey for you (I can understand), then go for a Nintendo 2DS (the same thing, only without the 3D function or being able to fold), which is only $120 new, and about $80 used on eBay. If for nothing else, it's worth getting one for Pokemon Sun and Moon.

Buy her a 2DS. They're a DS and more. Not too complicated too. If you buy her this, than all DS Games will work on it, and so will all 3DS games. Here's the link to one on Amazon.

Hope this helps! :)

Super Mario 3D World, Zelda: Link Between Worlds, Ocarina of Time 3D (and soon Majora's Mask 3D!), Fantasy Life, Kid Icarus Uprising, Bravely Default, Fire Emblem: Awakening, and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. These are games worth playing.

So, might I interest you in a 2DS for $115?

So amazon sold out of the 3ds's. But here are some 2ds consoles a bit under 100$!

I know you've gotten some good answers already, but I wanted to add that if you are going to get your son cards you could get something like this which will help him learn how to play. They also sell theme decks like these and this cool looking box that has energy cards and other game accessories as well as booster packs to open. On the other hand, if you just get booster packs or a tin like one of these he more than likely won't have enough energy cards and stuff to play the actual game. But a lot of kids just collect the cards, they don't actually play the game. If he is just going to collect, booster packs or tins that contain booster packs are the way to go.

And if in the future you decide to get him a 3DS, there is a cheaper option, the 2DS which functions exactly like a 3DS, just with no 3D feature. I think he would enjoy the newest pokemon games (X/Y, OR/AS) the most as you can connect to wifi to trade and battle with others. But until then I'd go with one of the more recent DS games like Black/White or Black 2/White 2.

Well, whatever you decide to get him, I hope your son enjoys his pokemon gifts! My 3 year old daughter loves pokemon and I've had a blast letting her play around with my 3DS and opening cards with her. She's got her own little collection going and is so proud of it! :)

Does he have a handheld? Because there are some great deals on those. I'll give you a few examples:

This is what I personally bought, it comes with a Pokemon game pre-installed. The 2DS only differs from the 3DS in that it does not fold and does not support 3D gameplay.

If you'd rather buy him just the 2DS and then find used games, you can pick one up for less than $120.

The PS Vita is a tad more expensive, so I can't give you any examples in the sub-$150 range. My best advice to you is to wait until Black Friday. Keep your eye out for handheld deals, most retailers (B&M and online) offer deals that include games or cheap handhelds by themselves.
