If possible, I first try to tell others something along the lines of "my dog doesn't like other dogs." Unfortunately, that doesn't always do it, and sometimes I have to get more blunt/serious while trying to create distance between my dog and the other dog any way I can. You can get leashes and harnesses that say "caution" or "in training" or "no dogs" like this. I haven't tried one myself, I imagine they aren't always effective. I encourage you to come join us in the reactive dog support group for advice, posted every Wednesday.
I use the front clip part of the "Freedom No-Pull Harness" for my reactive dog. Very helpful with pulling.
