To continue the metaphor there are others who say that theories of big things are like mechanical locks, and theories of small things are like electonic locks, and there is no single lockpick that can conceivably work for both of them, and String Theory, in trying, has to make some pretty implausible assumptions (such as that there are multiple additional dimensions which are curled up on themselves in little donuts so tightly as to be conceptually indetectable, which is why they have no apparent impact on the universe as we see it). Physists like Lee Smolin and Peter Woit point to this as evidence that physics is in fact in a crisis of sorts, and perhaps the whole thing is wrong.

> "Nobody who does serious science works with the multiverse because it's utterly useless said theoretical physicist Sabine Hossenfelder"

This negativism is a bit cultural thing, as Dr. Hossenfelder does competitive research of quantum gravity phenomenology. Also Peter Woit is supporter of (loop) quantum gravity and he wrote a famous book, which anticipated string theory fiasco in LHC and underground detectors. The proponents of both models use to fight each other, despite they're equally incompetent regarding testable quantitative predictions.

From that reason many string theorists refrained to multiverse speculations when their own deductions failed experimental tests at LHC and elsewhere. The resistance against multiverse concept is particularly strong between proponents of competitive (loop) quantum gravity (theory), because they consider it as a re-incarnation of stringy theories. Their hostility was inspiration for relations of Sheldon and Leslie Winkle in famous Big Bang Theory sitcom. There were rumors, that Dr. Hossenfelder served as an inspiration for Leslie character personally, because she's a bit similar to her...
