There are more types of magnesium, and oxide is the worst as bioavailability (only 5% is absorbed by the body) goes, but it is cheap.

"Magnesium forms a variety of industrially and biologically important compounds, including magnesium carbonate, magnesium chloride, magnesium citrate, magnesium hydroxide (milk of magnesia), magnesium oxide, magnesium sulfate, and magnesium sulfate heptahydrate (Epsom salts)."

Now I am not sure which one of these causes or not diarrhea, but for supplement we use citrate, because it is highly absorbed and doesn't cause problems for us, but YMMV. It is also not cheap and locally isn't sold.

I advise you to go on Amazon and look up magnesium citrate and sulfate and read the reviews if there is complaints about diarrhea...

Oh god, I literally feel your pain. I used to have a lot of problems with constipation. Once things are more in control, try switching to taking Magnesium Citrate. I take two of them a night, and not only does it help with that problem, it's a natural muscle relaxant! I only ever have issues now when I don't take it.

u/johnny-utah-busey · 5 pointsr/Supplements

Buy the ingredients separately.

Personally I only use 25 mg of Zinc and 400mg of Magnesium Citrate

Cheap as fuck:

  • Zinc = $8.50 per 500 doses
  • Mag = $11.20 per 125 doses

Sodium: broth/bouillon. Beef tastes better but chicken is more readily available. I'll put a TBSP into my 24oz coffee cup in the morning, drink it throughout the day, and that's about 2500mg of sodium. More if I counted the splash of Frank's Red Hot. Adding a TBSP of heavy cream really kicks it up a notch.

Potassium: No Salt (NOT Nu Salt or Lite Salt) as it provides 2600mg of potassium per TSP. Nu Salt contains more, if I'm not mistaken. I'll sneak 1/4 tsp of No Salt into that same coffee cup in the morning and usually split the remaining 3/4 tsp into two 28 oz bottles of water with a few squeezes of Mio water enhancer. Looks like Nu Salt might be easier for you to find, at least on amazon. Also, spinach.

Magnesium: two of these

For potassium I use this.

For magnesium I use this.

I do not take a multivitamin.

I also get a lot of potassium from avocados.

I'm not expert on pregnancy-related cramps, but I had success in eliminating leg cramps by taking a Magnesium Citrate supplement after I changed my diet. Electrolytes seem to help.

u/sassytaters · 2 pointsr/xxketo

Hi there. When I first started supplementing magnesium, I was taking magnesium oxide at 400mg a day. So much diarrhea. Switched to citrate instead, and it's been so much better. I also finally figured out I don't need 400mg a day. 100mg a day seems just right for me.

These are pretty good; it says 200mg but really they are 100mg each with a dosage of 2 pills. They are white caplets. http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BV1O26 You might give something like that a try, and decrease your dose until you see improvement.

u/Broder45 · 2 pointsr/Supplements

At first you had me questioning why the pharmacist had to sell it to you and could deny you, then I remembered what it was like in Germany where it was impossible to get supplements.

Disclaimer: I'm not a doctor.

I used to wake up 5-8 times a night. I now take 200mg before bed and can sleep through the night with the exception of waking up to pee since I drink protein shakes before sleeping. I started with 200mg and would not take more than 400mg as that's not recommended.

If you get one, get a Mag Citrate (https://www.amazon.com/Foods-Magnesium-Citrate-200mg-Tablets/dp/B000BV1O26) is what I use and I take 2 at night. Night is best as it relaxes your muscles.

I feel like I should clarify. I think that talking to your Dr. about your anxiety is a great idea. There are some decent medication options that could help both your anxiety and your migraines. So it would be a good conversation to have.

My point above is that you should state that you are NOT interested in taking any benzos. But be open to other options. My rule is that I always do research on a medication before I start taking it. And I always start by googling [MedicationName Withdrawal] and see what comes up. Some Drs are all to quick to prescribe stuff without giving any thought to the fact that getting off of the medication is going to be painful.

Ok that said, here's my recommendation for some non-prescription stuff you can investigate to reduce your anxiety.

  • Magnesium. This can be very calming.
  • L-Theanine
  • 5-HTP This may increase your levels of Serotonin. This can possibly make your migraines better or worse. Differs by the individual.
  • Kava
  • Valerian Root
  • GABA I've heard that "PharmaGABA" is much more likely to be effective that plain old GABA. Do some research. I don't really know.
  • The All-In-One There are a number of these formulations. They just combine a bunch of stuff listed above.

So there's some stuff you should do some research on. Some may relieve your anxiety but make your migraines worse. Some may be beneficial for both anxiety and migraines. It'll really be a trial and error to find out what works for your 'migraine brain'.

I've provided Amazon links, but you can honestly get most of these at your local Drug Store (CVS, Walgreens, etc.)

Remember always do your research, whether its a recommendation from your Dr, or some internet stranger. It's all just data points. Digest it, research it, and then make your own decision on what's right for your situation. I wish you the best!!

2 Magnesium tablets, 1 teaspoon Morton Lite Salt, and 2 bullion cubes a day will hit your electrolytes. You're in danger of heart palpitations and other serious problems if you continue like this.

Edit: Bananas are pure sugar and carbs and aren't a keto fruit. I know you're trying to eat your electrolytes, and that's great, but you're not going to be able to eat enough to cover what you need. You have to supplement. I went months on keto without supplementing and I wasn't hitting my macros. I was an emotional rollercoaster at home and tired and unfocused at work. Putting Lite Salt on everything (mostly mixed in with my 2 bullion cubes), and taking two magnesium supplements changed everything.

For the potassium

For the magnesium

Note: the only reason they're from two different brands, is I bought them about a week apart and the store was out of the potassium in the other brand

I started taking Magnesium Citrate every few days personally.

Word of warning: when you first start to take it start off slow, like 1 tablet every day. Then gradually increase to 2 then to 3. If you do too much at once at the start you will literally shit your entire asshole out and still feel like you need to shit your entire digestive system out. I'd also probably time your first dose to the day before you have an off day from school or work, just in case your body decides it wants to go all Mount St. Helens on you.

Once you've become adapted to it then you can skip a few days every week to help spread the cost out over a longer period of time. I personally average about 6-7 capsules a week (recommended serving is like 3 a day) and haven't had any problems since. As an added bonus, it also helps prevent or reduce the occurrence of muscle cramps/charley horses.

Tagging /u/condorama as well.

I use mag citrate. No shits, for the record. I'm not sure if that makes a difference as to which you use, but my understanding is that mag citrate is more bio available than oxide.

I am lazy keto, and I don't always go as much as I'd like. I use this to help move things along when I need to. Just one usually softens things up enough to go in about 12 hours, and two usually makes things far too soft for my liking in about 6. Lots of water with it; I try to drink a quart of water when or just after I take it, and make sure I get at least a gallon over the next 8 hours. It works by drawing water into the bowel, so you need to replenish what it's using.

Edit: fixed link

I take magnesium citrate, 400mg every night as well as my wife.
We have experienced no issues with loose stools or surprise bowels.

That is what I use.

Citrate is used as a laxative but understand it's 10 times that dosage. Maybe you might have an issue with occasional use?

It's very relaxing, my sleep quality is better, it's almost sedative at that dosing and my dental bitewing xrays I just had were "the best they have ever been". Anecdotal, could be unrelated so take as you will.

No I didn't mention it, I actually plan on getting some because I know everyone and their mama recommend it as well as the FAQ :).

I am currently browsing the reddit for what magnesium supliment I should get. I know I need like 500g a day so I was thinking of getting this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Now-Foods-Magnesium-Citrate-Tablets/dp/B000BV1O26

250 tablets of 200mg of magnesium citrate. I am hoping this will help overall with things. Btw some time has passed today since my crazy night of sleep, still fully awake, not drowsy and energetic. Still got a little heartburn, but doing well. My muscles aren't as fatigued as last night, I guess the rest I got was good enough.

u/hrtl · 1 pointr/keto

That's a good point, I believe it was on a page about digestive health so that sounds about right. I think I'm going to eventually pick up some of these on amazon: Potassium Citrate & Magesium Citrate. The prices seem pretty good.

Morton Salt Alternative --> I use a Windsor Salt alternative but I know people that use a similar product to morton's to get potassium fix. Take your half/No-Salt and mix it with some flavoring like mio or crystal light and make their own electrolyte beverage, which can up what you need without the bad crap. I'll have a couple of these pre mixed and down em if I'm starting to feel sluggish.

Magnesium -> Magnesium Citrate or Magnesium Chelate (I couldn't find the one I use, but found similar) or Magnesium Oxide. The way i've been reading is that people react to each one different...but I prefer Chelate to up my general magnesium intake. I believe it absorbs better then the other two, but as I said I think it comes down to how your body reacts to it. Citrate is the more costly of the bunch, usually goes from cheapest to most expensive; Oxide -> Chelate -> Citrate. I take one of these during morning and one at night. (wouldn't take on empty stomach) You can usually get these at any nutrition store in 50-100 tablet containers.

In general I'd stick to veggies or no/half-salt for your potassium intake over supplements because regulations (at least in Canada,) mean the max they will produce is like 100-150mgs, so its easier and more cost efficient to go through whole foods. Magnesium alot of people will supplement, but you can get potassium and magnesium from two killer veggies in Kale and Spinach. Don't have MFP handy, but google says kale has roughly 50mg's of magnesium and 500mg's of potassium per 100grams. With spinach having 500mg's of pot. and 80mg's of mag. Swiss chard is also a killer veggie if you like variety. An easy way to get some early morning nutrients is to toss a handful spinach in with your scrambled eggs.

Magnesium Citrate can be found at any health food store/natural store. I bought a bottle of Now Magnesium Citrate at 200mg per pill. Probably at pharmacies too. Instead of pouring salt on everything or mixing it with water (I did it once, yuck) you can just buy some broth. Either beef broth or chicken broth. It has plenty of sodium in it.

Personally, when I did the 1/4 tsp of salt with water, I retained about 2 pounds for the next 48 hours. Looking at dietary sodium, I get around 3k or 4k anyway. So I just dropped trying to add the soidum.

The 'No-Salt' is a potassium based, salt replacement that can be found in the grocery store, in the spices aisle. This one's important. I take 1/4 tsp in 16 oz of water, WITH a 1/4 tsp of Lemonade MIO. The lemonade flavoring really CUTS the taste of the potassium. That single dose of 1/4 tsp is around 1300mg of potassium. I do that 2x a day.

I searching everywhere and couldn't find Magnesium Citrate in any store. I had to order it from Amazon. Be careful with it. Taking too much has a laxative effect. I don't take it everyday, only when I need it.

u/Passerby6 · 1 pointr/RedPillWomen

Most people are deficient in magnesium. Take this before bed. They sell mag oxide in the stores, you want citrate.

u/ryeguy · 1 pointr/Supplements

Thanks for your help. Is something like this acceptable, and safe to take with the above multi? Also, how much lemon juice should I be taking daily to get the desired effects?
