I bought toddler sized plastic utensils.

I liked these when we first started out because the bend in the handle and the more curved fork were easier for him to use.

I can't find an online link, but the other set we use are made out of recycled plastic and look like adult utensils except they're smaller. My son is two and a half now and while he can use adult utensils with ease, he prefers to use the smaller toddler sized ones. I think they're more comfortable for him.

I swear teethers are designed to make it hard for babies to both hold and chew at the same time. It's safe because baby hates it!

The best thing I've found are these toddler spoons. They're easy to grip an he chews on the end of the handle, but you have to make sure he doesn't ram them down his throat by accident. The single black and white lots o' links link is pretty good too.

I think you just have to keep putting the things in his hands instead of his mouth so that he has to figure it out on his own. My kiddo was terrible at it for about a week and then really figured it out, but at almost 16 weeks still can't really pick things back up one he's dropped them except stacking cups and stuffed animals.
