It looks to me like the kind of bowl you put on a dining table, filled with fruits, flowers etc, as decoration and something for guests to talk about. I think hot soups were seldom served in metal bowls, since the food would very soon get cold. And the metal would become rather hot to touch. Sometimes you'd serve sauce from a metal container, though. Then, of course, I'm only familiar with northern Europe traditions.
