Bought this Samsung 2TB HDD last week, took about 2 days to finish re-downloading all my games (plus some that I deleted to make more space). Works great!

Currently this is one of the most used 2TB drive.
Also, you can get this one and remove the hard from inside. There are many videos on YouTube.

If you're looking to install bigger sizes (4TB+) that has 7200 rpm, get Nyko Data Bank, it allows you to install 3.5 inch hard drives which basically have 7200 rpm.

I personally got the Samsung Momentus Spinpoint 2TB which works like a dream for me. No beeping issues others have said from the Backup Plus.

It's a laptop hard drive with a casing. Remove the casing and you'll have a hard drive that can be used on the PS4. Or you can purchase the Seagate 2TB hard drive which is the same drive that's on the Seagate Backup Plus but without the external enclosure and more expensive.

It's discounted on price and it's one of the only 2TB HDDs that the PS4 can fit. It's also ridiculously easy to install, Sony even has a guide to upgrading your HDD on their website.

Not as cheap as the method provided by the OP but if you don't want the hassle of opening a device and taking the HDD out you can buy this 2tb HDD from Samsung for £89.99 that works on the PS4.

It's £30 more than the Eurogamer method but you're paying that extra money for the convenience and so replacing the HDD is hassle free.

I've seen HDDs installed in ODD bays before, but only on Macs. Never thought about doing it on an Alienware. Might be easy, might be hard, might be impossible. This would be especially true if the ODD was a slot-loader.

Easiest thing I can recommend would be to get a 1TB 2.5"-wide 9.5MM-tall HDD, and clone your current OS onto it using a USB-to-SATA Cloning Kit (generally ~$15-$25). That'll leave you 3/4 of a terabyte left over for everything else you need.

Heck, you can even get this 2TB drive which should fit in your system just fine (2.5"-wide, 9.5mm-tall).

Your use case seems pretty niche then. I'd consider myself a power user, and i've barely used 1TB of storage on my system. It's a Samsung drive and you can get it in external drive form (and take it out of the case to install it), or in bare drive form (which is usually more expensive)

This is the one I got. I've had it about 6 months with no problem. You'll notice the PS4 boots a bit faster than the factory hard drive as well. At least it did for me.

It is amazingly easy to install a new HD on a PS4. I would recommend doing it right out of the box for the least amount of hassle. Just YouTube it and you'll be happy with your decision. Let me know if you have questions.

not sure if there is anything special about them. Probably just a Sony-branded HGST or Toshiba drive. You will have to take it out of the case anyway to put it inside the PS4. The PS4 doesn't accept external drives via USB.

I actually just upgraded my hard drive and did a bit amount of research into it. Depending on the specs, there are definitely some differences in load times but all in all they are pretty negligible. Look for articles on IGN or others that will give you rest results. You will have to spend 200-400 for a nice one and still will save only 5 seconds or so on load times. People will suggest the external drive, that's fine but remember when you pull it out of the case the warranty is VOID. This one comes with a two year warranty.


Install and move everything over, then you have nothing to worry about. Honestly, if you have the money just go for it then you don't have to deal with it down the road. I did it for that very reason.

Also, just a heads up you only have a one year warranty on the PS4 unless you purchased an extended one from the store you bought it from. If you're worried about that, I'd drop the money on the Protection Plan they sell in the PS store. $54 for three years including accidents? That's a $1.50 a month to not worry about my PS4 for three years. Yes please.

I got a 2TB usb 3.0 external drive for my xbox one on my birthday(dec 5th) and when i installed it i followed these steps.

• With the console off, plug in the drive.
  
• Turn on the console and wait for the home screen to load.
  
• a notification will appear telling you that your 'External drive is ready to be configured'
  
• Hold the home button to open that and configure it.
  
• After configuration you will be giving a final window asking to install all future items on this drive, choose yes!

If you can spare $100, get one of these - it'll be faster, more reliable, and last longer.

When it comes to console storage, hybrid drives are a waste of money, sometimes performing even slower than the stock drive. The solid-state section of the drive is simply too small to be used effectively as a cache, and the OS isn't set up to handle it like that.

You can pick up a 2.5-inch external drive for $86, pop the enclosure open, and pull the drive out. Although it's a 5400RPM, the sheer areal density makes it effectively much faster than its spec implies.

Newegg and Best Buy also carry that drive, currently for $90. It's relatively easy to pop out, because the enclosure is held together with adhesive instead of plastic clips. There are several Youtube videos that will give you some visual aid.

Be aware that removing the drive from the enclosure will void its warranty (but upgrading the PS4's storage will not void the PS4's warranty).

Edit: It's probably worth spending $8 more to get the bare drive, since its warranty will remain intact.

Kind of odd, and I'm sure it's a typo, but this 2.5" HDD that you mentioned says "SATA II 6.0 Gbps interface" which doesn't exist. It should either be SATA II 3.0 Gbps, or SATA III 6.0 Gbps. Either way, wow, last time I checked, the largest 2.5" drives were 1TB.

You will need to go to application saved data management in settings to backup your game data with the PS+ cloud service or with USB. Then when you set up the new hard drive you go back into those settings and download the data.

It was on the expensive side but a lot of people were praising it. There were plenty of cheaper external ones at the time too, but I opted for the good stuff. I recommend immediately upgrading your hard drive so that you don't have to worry about it down the line. I bought my PS4 on Black Friday 2014 and I've needed to upgrade the HD for a few months now. Finally upgraded it today to this 2TB Seagate HD.


I'm currently in the process of redownloading all my PSN games and patches, which have been a pain. It would've been an equal pain buying and backing up to an external HD. This is why I recommend immediately upgrading your HD. It was surprisingly very easy to do, as I followed the link on the sidebar of this subreddit.


Just format a Flash Drive to Fat32 or ExFat and download the New Install file from Sony. Slide cover off PS4, unscrew 5 screws, replace HD, rescrew, boot into Safe Mode and install the OS Software from the New Install file. Boom. I was done in no time at all.

I bought this one and it worked great for two months, and then i randomly started getting error code CE-34335-8, hard drive not detected and became unusable.

I got it around the middle of August. It hasn't given me any trouble, and all the extra space is just great.
Also, if you have and still play a PS3, but you lack the space, you should remove your current PS4 hard drive (if your getting a new one) and put it into your PS3. Really came in handy.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure the PS4 is not able to use an external HD (as in you're connecting the external HD to the USB input).

You CAN take out the HD itself out of the housing and replace the PS4 stock one with it though. You'll have to check on which ones are compatible.

This one seems like a good option. I did my replacement a year ago so I can't remember all the details but I think the one you posted is the wrong kind . Go to the PlayStation support page for info and look up guides on replacing your hdd.

high performance is one thing, but for me, drive reliability in the main thing by far - as far as reliability, nothing comes close to the Samsung-Seagate SpinPoint ST2000LM003 2 TB 2.5" SATA drive (notebook size) - if you ever had a drive fail and lose all of your data, then you will make reliability your main criteria as well - I think if you optimize your system otherwise, even 5400 rpm will be fine.

Are you looking for speed, or size? I personally recommend the Seagate 1TB SSHD for speed/size for value, as you get twice the standard drive size, and a big increase in speed. It automatically caches the most used files on the SSD portion of the drive, so that game files or OS files that are accessed frequently can be loaded the fastest. It increased boot speed and game load times on games you play frequently. I do all my editing on a 4 year old 15inch macbook pro and it's absolutely solid for lightroom, photoshop and panorama stitching. If you buy a used non retina macbook, switching out the hard drive for an SSD and putting 16GB of ram in it will only cost you about $160. Get the core i7 and this set up will cost you around $800 and last you years.

With the older macbooks you can also switch out the CD drive with a 2TB hard drive and have all your photos locally, get a data doubler and a 2tb drive and you'll have yourself a beast of a machine with all the storage you need. They give you all the instructions, it's really quite simple

I've used the Samsung M9T 2TB HDD without problems, it was the largest 2.5" drive I could find at the time, it might still be.

You could try the Seagate Momentus XT 1TB if you wanted an SSHD, or if you had a bit more money to spend, the old faithful Samsung 850 Evo

Interesting. This is the one I have, not sure if the same. The one that actually arrived had Seagate branding, but I believe the are same company now. It's the same type I ordered for original PS4 (although that was branded as Samsung) and never had that beep.

I upgraded before I installed anything on mine, a year and a half ago. Edit: Almost forgot. I had trouble for some reason finding the right version of the PS operating system. Had to try a few times. A quick Google search will find you other locations to download from if the one on the PS website isn't working for you.

My opinion is that it's not worth getting a 1tb drive, when you can get a 2tb for a little bit more. The 2tb drive I linked has about 1.76 or 1.77TB after installation and updates. As far as I know, 2tb is the largest drive you can fit into the PS4. If the one I linked is out of your budget, look around amazon. Just make sure the drive is 2.5 inch and read the user reviews to see if anyone has tried it on their PS4.

Funny you ask, I'm shopping around right now too. Have you decided on HDD or SSHD? Your options are basically 1TB SSHD or you can get a 2 TB HDD. Personally, I would prefer more space. It's on sale now $89 at Best Buy and Amazon. If you're gonna change out the HDD, you might as well go 2TB in my opinion.

Its probably using MRSP of notebook HDDs and MRSP of SSDs. And the cheapest 2.5" HDD I see is 4.7c/gb. So only a x4-x5 price gap for the notebook market.

This was my primary backup drive, and yes, last I checked its speed was 5400rpm (https://www.amazon.com/Seagate-Laptop-2-5-Inch-Internal-ST2000LM003/dp/B00I8O6OQ4). My OS is installed on my Samsung EVO 850 256GB SSD. My secondary backup drive is my 3.5" Seagate Barracuda Green 1TB HDD and that one is full of Steam games backups--it's still working. Sorry if you think I was shitposting, I just thought some people might be able to relate to how I'm feeling.

I'm based in the UK so you may need to find them on US Amazon or something, but these drives all fit the PS4.

Alternatively you can buy an external hard drive that is the same as those mentioned above but is enclosed in a case. You can break the thing out of the case and then replace it with your old Hard Drive so you then have a 500Gb external hard drive too. Instruction on how to do that here

Upgrading the Hard Drive really isn't that difficult.
All you need to do is buy the drive you want and make sure it is 9.5mm x 2.5inch (I recently got this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00I8O6OQ4/ref), next you'll want to make sure that any saves you have are backed up either on the cloud storage or an external drive. To save time later I would advise downloading the most up-to-date version of the PS4 OS from Sony's website (From here you'll want the "Fresh Install option - https://www.playstation.com/en-us/support/system-updates/ps4/), follow the instructions and save this to a USB with at least 1Gb of space.

(Note that you will need a small crosshead screwdriver for this)

Once you've got the drive all you need to do is slide the shiny part of the console away from the power indicator and you'll hear it unlock. From here you should notice a small screw that has the well known PS buttons on it, simply unscrew that and pull the drive out in its holder. You'll notice that there are 4 more screws holding the drive to the caddy, simply unscrew these and the drive will come out.

Now all you need to do is remove the packaging from your new drive, screw it into place on the caddy, re-insert the caddy and screw it into place with the "Sony Screw", reconnect the power/TV/Controller/USB, boot up the PS4 into Safe Mode (Hold power for ~7secs) and choose option 7. From here the drive will update from your USB and after that it'll be good for use, all you need to do is reinstall all those lovely games.

It will be back in stock Aug. 22 (as of this posting). I purchased the same hard drive a couple of weeks ago because I didn't want to hassle with removing the hard drive from the external case (which would also void the warranty) and didn't care to use the external case to house the original PS4 hard drive. Getting the hard drive on its own is a little more expensive than the external option ($120 vs. $100) and doesn't give you a "free" external case, but if you're cool with that then it's an option. And who doesn't like options? :)

For me it delivered in two days with Amazon prime. The installation took about 5 minutes probably 30 minutes total to format everything. The hardest part was having to download the firmware which was obviously really easy.

Things seems to load a lot faster and obviously I have a bunch of memory. The only problem I faced was for some reason one of my games wouldn't play anymore but played on my brothers console. Luckily the game was on sale on PSN for 20 bucks so I bought it again and gave the hard copy to my bro. Like I said I can't speak for the other harddrive but I really like the one I bought.
