The mesh isn't as fine as the circular ones but it gets the majority of the gunk out of the wort. Also use it to hold the grain bag over my pot while sparging partial mash brews.
Depends on the size of your batch, but I think you should be able to make it work. I have about ~4 in. of clearance and I use this to hold the bag for 2.7gal batches.
