Here are some of the first things I did.
Turn on screen gestures. I use them in my car for changing tracks in my car mount.
Install Nova launcher. Makes the transition between phones really easy and I just like the customizability.
Download an AMOLED wallpaper. Coming from a OnePlus One, I did not know true love until I experienced the contrast that is this screen. (Some options, but honestly google is your friend here)
Go to settings and set dark mode (for reasons above)
Because I came from a OnePlus one, I remapped all my hardware buttons. I use double tap home as my last app, holding home brings up Google now, double tap right for my camera, etc.
I also rooted, installed xposed, but this isn't necessary to enjoy the phone.
I also ordered some accessories in advance. A couple micro SD to USB c connectors, an extra USB c cable, tempered glass edge to edge protector and a dbrand skin during their sale.

That's what I got off the top of my head.
Edit: Forgot, set your color balance under display settings. I didn't go the sRGB route (see all news about oxygen os update). My slider is set about 2/3 to 3/4 from the left. You may find the screen overly blue or yellow otherwise.

I'm curious if it will fit with the sandstone case. Finding screen protectors that don't interfere with cases has been somewhat of a problem with most smartphones I've used.
Can't speak for the Rugged, but my Neo Hybrid absolutely destroyed my glass screen protector.
I did take a chance and buy this screen protector. It claims to cover the entire screen unlike the ones from OP. Haven't received it yet, so can't confirm.

I got the TUDIA 2 piece case in yesterday and I LOVE it. It's great. I still want the otterbox but my phone feels pretty secure.
