Hey, just want to share my experience. I'm 6'6". Was 160 in college, but am now up to 240 @ 17%. Still have a lot of work ahead of me. Biggest thing: weight gain shakes are your friend. Joylent's second ingredient is Maltodextrin (as part of the "Joylent Vitamix").

To be clear, I'm not looking for something which has zero maltodextrin, but it's commonly one of the first set of ingredients (in the examples so far, in the top three) and is essentially sugar, although it doesn't need to be categorized as such on the nutrition facts. This concerns me from a dietary perspective (for instance, risk of diabetes) and also makes me question the company's ethics.

For example, ON Serious Mass has 56g of sugar in a ~1250 kcal serving, whereas ON Pro Gainer drops this to just 12g in a ~1300 kcal serving (2 scoops). How do they accomplish this feat? They increase the amount of fat (from 4.5g to 16g) and up the amount of maltodextrin - a sugar that doesn't have to be listed as a sugar in the nutrition facts. (Incidentally, both these weight gainers have maltodextrin as their first ingredient.) In their defense, post-workout is just about the only time you'd really benefit from a big kick of glucose, as your muscles are starting to repair themselves.

There are a lot of "cheat" ways recommended.

Adding olive or coconut oil to shakes.

It actually has pretty good macros for the price, 60 carbs and 40 protein per serving, so it's a much better ratio than most I've seen at that price. It comes out to about $2.50 or so per serving, which is cheaper than a chicken breast and has more calories.

Peanut butter.

Whole milk in general.

Traditional greek yogurt, so not non or low fat while bulking at least.

Oats (can be put in shakes, I recommend grinding it in a coffee grinder first)

Some people go the extra step and put heavy whipping cream in their shakes or half and half as well.

Basically you can make a blend of ground up oats, whole milk, protein powder, peanut butter, some fruits, and oils, and you have a shakes with a lot of your required macros that will probably break 1000 calories easy.

Diet same was the same as off cycle, as many calories as I can everyday. I was/am a "hard gainer" so inhaling everything I could has been my diet for the past 3 years.

Also drank about 2 pro gainer shakes a day. Sometimes more, sometimes less.

One scoop of each with milk per serving. Stop drinking any form of sugary drink like soda or juice. Drink only water and these shakes. Water with meals so you don't fill your stomach up with low nutrition sugary drinks and a shake after every meal. A shake when you wake up in the morning is fine for breakfast, and a shake right before bed. If you go to bed and 15 minutes later you feel like you can drink another one, do it. That's 2-3 shakes with meals, one in the morning before or as a meal, and one before bed with the possibility for more. This all assumes you are either skinny as fuck like me or hitting the gym regularly like I used to.

Creatine won't put on mass - it improves the recovery of ADP into ATP (the fuel your cells use to do work). The effect is that it lets you squeeze out a couple more reps, which results in more muscle damage and thus can result in greater muscle growth when the muscles are fed adequately. If you aren't eating enough, all the creatine in the world isn't going to do anything for you.

There are "gainer" supplements, which are just calorie-dense foods. For example this gainer is 650 calories per scoop - 60g of protein and 85g of carbohydrate. Mix 2 scoops into 2 cups of whole milk and you have an 1500 calorie milkshake that you'll kill in a couple of minutes and which will leave you hungry again soon.

I second the opinion that you should start logging and tracking what you eat. Buy a food scale if you have the option - you can get them super cheap on Amazon. Measuring will help make sure that you're getting enough protein relative to your carb and fat intake, too.

I have an autoimmune disease (eosinophillic esophagitis) where my body views most food as an allergen. In response, I'll accumulate eosinophills (a type of white blood cell) in my esophagus causing it to swell and not function properly. I usually have several weeks during the year where eating solid food just...isn't an option.

Trying to gain with a gastrointestinal issue sucks. It's something I've been dealing with my whole life too (I'm 26 now). I found that liquids are the easiest way for me to gain weight. Gainer shakes are amazing. I use this guy:

I use:

  • one scoop of Pro Gainer (650 cal, 60g protein)

  • 2 cups of 2% milk (280 cal, 20g protein) (Note: Whole milk nets you more calories, but I use 2% because I've got a history of cholesterol issues in my family)

  • 1 banana (100 cal)

    This gives me 1030 calories and 80g protein. If you add peanut butter, that'll give you another 200 cal/15g protein right there.

I only finished a bag and a half but i gained around 10-12Lbs during that time and mostly lean but not quite fully.
