I've been using the Ototek Loop for years now with no issues. Use it about once every two weeks after a shower. Feels good to use too

You and /u/champdellight might also be interested in a more direct method too:

I'd suggest using it carefully and results may vary depending on the size / shape of your ear, but I've found it works well so long as you're careful.

There's all kinds of tools at the pharmacy for getting out stuff in your ear, the loop ear tool has a soft hook at the end and I have scratched my throat using to roughly that hurt for a couple weeks.

I had a girlfriend a few years ago that lost a ball from an earring inside her ear she ended up at the doctor because she couldn't hear. The doc pouring a liquid inside her ear and out rolled the ball.

A little piece of rubber I'm not so sure about

I have excess wax issues, and have to clean my earplugs (ER-20s are what I'm using at the moment) frequently, but in almost 20 years of wearing musician's earplugs I haven't had any significant issues with buildup caused by the earplugs themselves. I use one of these to help with wax removal, and it works pretty well. I've also used hydrogen peroxide and some other methods to deal with hardened wax on rare occasions. It sounds like your issues are more severe, but try not to let wax issues keep you from wearing hearing protection - cilia don't grow back.

You'll want to keep your ear canals clean, obviously. And try not to shove the earplugs too deep into your ear. I do this sometimes when I'm gigging and the drummer's really wailing on the cymbals, but it can result in the earplug picking up wax from the canal, and in your case could cause impaction. You might also look at MusicSafe plugs - they're double flange musician's plugs, and might not go as deep into the ear canal as the typical triple flange musician's plugs.

I would play it safe and not irrigate your ear. It could potentially cause an ear infection. If you need to clean your ears out, I would recomend this. As it has a safety guard to prevent you from going too far into your ear.

Also, remember that earwax is your friend, it prevents infections as well as trapping dust and dirt, so unless its affecting your hearing id leave it in.

Lastly, if you just have to flush your ears, please use 2 cups distilled water with 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide, this ensures that it is sanitary as possible. But I really really would not recommend it.

Ototek Loops FTW. I have moderate wax buildup and these are great for safely cleaning it out.
