And there's not a lot anyone else can say to convince you otherwise, because a lot of our self-destructive thoughts are irrational and irrationality doesn't respond to logic (or it wouldn't be irrational).

I'm wondering if something like CBT can help modify those thought patterns into something more positive. Maybe http://www.amazon.co.uk/Overcoming-Low-Self-Esteem-Books/dp/1849010684/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_y could help (sorry for UK link). I haven't read it, but I've heard good things about that series and it must be good because the cover is shit.

Talking to a therapist is a great start. I get what you mean about the insecurities lessening if things go well. If self-esteem is low for you in general, this is a book I'm reading for low self-esteem. It might be worth checking out: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Overcoming-Low-Self-Esteem-Books/dp/1849010684/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1462634102&sr=8-2&keywords=self+esteem

Kind of a low-tech site, but the Centre for Clinical Interventions have a page of courses in PDF form that you can work through to tackle various issues (e.g. depression, or anxiety, or eating disorders, etc). I'm sort of working my way through about 5 of them at the moment. Since they're all CBT there's a fair bit of overlap between them in terms of activities/thought processes it encourages, but it all helps to reinforce it I find.

Another similarly low-tech site is MoodGym (it looks very shiny to begin with, but they're in the process of updating, so it soon turns into a somewhat dated interface). You have to create an account to use it but it's more interactive than the previous site.

I found quite a lot of CBT self-help books in my library (in the UK), the couple I have out are: Overcoming Low Self-Esteem: A self-help guide using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy by Melanie Fennel, and Overcoming Anxiety, Stress and Panic: A Five Areas Approach by Dr. Chris Williams. They've both been very useful, but I don't know of their availability outside of the UK, sorry!

Don't know of those were the sort of things you were looking for, but I hope they're useful.
