It is indeed because of a rug. Moisture was trapped between the two, and left that stain. The traditional way to lighten it up is with oxalic acid:

It would never go away 100%, but it could be made less noticeable.
Or put another rug down and call it a day.....

It is bleach for wood floors, and can make the color much closer to even. If that is what you want.
Pretty much. Stains don't lay on the surface; they are absorbed into the pores of the wood. Think of a bad stain as a wood tattoo. That is why they are sanded when refinishing. There is no easy way to pull the stain out of the pores.

OK. You may be able to make the stains and parches go away. Look at oxalic acid:

It is used for bleaching wood. And it works. You may not get 100% of the ugly out of the wood, but 90% is certainly doable, in most cases.
