What's your budget? That's going to make a difference in what gets recommended. If you can only spend $100 vs $500 there are going to be some compromises that you'll have to make, especially when it comes to the grinder.

Scale:

  • This basic scale does not include a timer, but you could just use your phone or something https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004C3CAB8

  • This scale comes with a timer and some advanced features https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3U7RKH

  • The Acaia scales are the top-notch pro-level deal which don't really add much compared to the Brewista scale, but people like them. https://www.amazon.com/s/ie=UTF8&search-alias=aps&field-keywords=Acaia

    Burr Grinder:

  • Most basic hand grinder that will give you the least amount of problems for the price: https://www.amazon.com/Hario-Skerton-Coffee-Grinder-Black/dp/B01MXJI90S

  • Jump on up to the AerGrind, Feld2, Lido, Helor 101, Kinu M47, Commandante... these hand grinders are top-notch and a great value, giving the best quality grind until you hit the $500-600 price.

  • If you want to go electric, don't get anything less than the Encore which you can get refurb for $100. It won't be as good of a grind as the better hand grinders, but it's a great grinder for the price.

    Pour over cone:

  • I really can't recommend anything other than the V60. I don't see an advantage to the Wave or Chemex. They all make the same quality level of coffee, but the Wave filters can be annoying, the Chemex filters are extra thick and you may not care for it, and both Wave and Chemex are more expensive. Get the $5 plastic V60-02 and some white filters for $10 and you're set. Or you can get a fancier glass or metal one if you want. Get a server/carafe if you plan on making that much coffee but it can just sit on a mug. If you want to try the Chemex filters, they fit in the V60-02 or V60-03. If you want to try cloth or metal filters, there are options that fit in the V60's.

    Gooseneck Kettle

  • Bonavita Variable Temp is perfectly fine but not amazing quality; mine has lasted a couple years just fine but I can't use my well water in it because it rusts it due to high sodium levels... also it tends to heat the water too much if I don't have at least a pint in it (I often don't). It's not too annoying though, just be aware it's not perfect but is good for the price https://www.amazon.com/Bonavita-BV382510V-Variable-Temperature-Gooseneck/dp/B005YR0F40

  • The Oxo kettle would be the competitor at that price, which I haven't used but it's worth looking at reviews for it https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Adjustable-Temperature-Electric-Pour-Over/dp/B074KHPS7F/

  • For a cheaper kettle option you'd have to go stovetop. Hario Buono is a good one for that.

  • A desirable kettle if you can afford it is the Fellow Stagg EKG.

Prioritize the grinder and make that the most expensive part of your setup. You can easily deal with a $10 scale, $5 pour over cone, $35 kettle, but a grinder that is $25 vs $50 vs $150 will make a huge difference in not just the taste quality of your coffee but the more expensive grinders will also reduce your frustration level by giving you less fines and more even grinds so it will be easier to hit the brew times, taste notes, and reduce the bitterness.

The Bonavita is a great kettle and is the standard recommendation around here. I feel the OXO is the better kettle but is currently full price. I'd say get the Bonavita or wait for a sale unless you really like the look of it.

As for scales, anything from AWS that fits your max weight and accuracy.

I did a bit of research and got this one from OXO. The entire kettle itself is stainless steel, no plastic or glass near the heating element or water, only where the bottom connects to the stand (which never gets remotely hot). You can dial in the exact temperature to the degree and can utilize it as a timer/stopwatch too. I've had mine for about a year and it still looks new. Definitely recommend it.

That's on the low end for the usual, recommended kettle here. The Bonavita 1L variable temp retails for $65ish. MassDrop is a website that polls its members for what they want to buy. Members vote on certain products. If polls show enough interest, MassDrop offers the item for sale and the price usually decreases based on how many sign up for the "drop."

I have an OXO variable kettle I snagged for $60ish which now sits at $99.

Variable temp kettles are certainly more expensive than their counterparts, but filling it with water, pressing a button, then going about your business is very nice. I use mine enough I got another for the office. They are by no means necessities, and it's been my last piece of gear to upgrade.

If you're looking for a variable temperature kettle (without presets) I'd recommend the OXO On Adjustable Temperature Electric Pour-Over Kettle. I've had it for almost a year and its been great.

I was overwhelmed with reading all of the options when I got into this. After a lot of reading I got a Chemex.

These four things were the most highly recommended from all chemex posts on this sub. These are the basics, and from there I used tons of different beans

How does that Bonavita compare to the OXO @ https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B074KHPS7F/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 out of curiosity? I just ordered it, but I'd happily cancel if I can get the same functionality for half the price.

u/mrw_im_on_reddit · 1 pointr/keto

Yeah, this is what I've got now- SO much easier to control, and way easier to work with. Less clean up, too. Love it!

Do you have your heart set on a Stagg? I recently was in a similar boat but landed on Oxo’s offering. Used with a 20% off coupon to Bed Bath and Beyond and you can get them for around $80.

Heats really fast, great accuracy, excellent pour, and doesn’t have the metal ring that burns the heck out of your hand like the top of the Stagg handle =).

Here's an Amazon link. I waited around for a bed bath and beyond coupon to get it cheaper since the price looked the same everywhere.

Oxo gooseneck. All stainless steel except for the signature Oxo silicone handle and the top of the lid which has a silicone handle, but underneath the lid is all stainless steel.

I just purchased this kettle and I absolutely love it. It's on sale on Amazon, too.

I almost purchased the Fellow Stagg EKG but aside from being aesthetically-pleasing, I can't justify the price. I've also heard of the handle randomly falling off after a few uses.

u/kristinworks · 1 pointr/tea

What do you dislike about the design - The plastic handle? The base? The shape of the kettle?

If you can narrow that down, it will help with suggestions.

The Cosori isn't stainless, but it's still pretty attractive if the matte black works with your kitchen. OXO makes a stainless one that is pretty popular around here.

After reading some other reviews and comments here (thanks!), I canceled the order on that product and purchased the OXO one. I think it's a big improvement over the Bonavita in terms of build quality and ease of use.
