Cash and ATM cards work best. It can be hard to reliably find places that take credit cards, but ATM cards are becoming as ubiquitous in Asia as other parts of the world. I always happily accepted any fees, as they were not extravagant.

Under no circumstances use travelers checks. That's just taking a day out of your life to sit in a bank somewhere filling out forms in triplicate (without carbon paper) and providing an endless stream of signatures. I usually carry a few $100 bills in a belt with a zippered compartment like this one - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001RW7HCO/. Keep those bills for backup, though, and try to just get cash out of ATM machines (in local currencies).

You should be able to purchase a used candybar cellphone in most countries for $10 or so, and pre-paid minutes go for about $0.10-.20. Your smart phone or tablet would still be handy for taking pictures, checking e-mail, browsing the web, etc.
