Get a combination cable lock like this or like [this](https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000PFT196
), then you can leave the gun in the open (not just unlocked but open) case and avoid moisture buildup.
A soft case is a lot more practical if you're not shipping the gun.
Don't worry about cleaning stuff at first.
You'll want a separate ammo box with its own lock. These kinds of locks are cheap and will fit on a plastic toolbox.

I've taken lots of overnight trains, in Europe and beyond, and never been robbed. On actual sleeper trains I try to book the bottom bed, which often has a top-loading storage cabinet underneath it. Someone would literally have to lift your body into the air to get to your pack. Otherwise, I keep my absolute-valuables in a small purse that I wrap around my arm and keep on the wall side of my body. If I can't store my pack under my bed then I try to secure it to something using a cable lock, which reduces the possibility of a "crime of opportunity".
