Get a combination cable lock like this or like [this](https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B000PFT196
), then you can leave the gun in the open (not just unlocked but open) case and avoid moisture buildup.

A soft case is a lot more practical if you're not shipping the gun.

Don't worry about cleaning stuff at first.

You'll want a separate ammo box with its own lock. These kinds of locks are cheap and will fit on a plastic toolbox.

3M makes the best ear and eye protection for the money. 3M muffs and gogs are about $5 each and their 1100-series plugs come in a box of 200 individually-wrapped pairs for about $35.

Cheap optics are a waste of money.

A sling is nice to have. You can get one from one of the Chinese sites (fasttech, dx, etc.) for under $10.

A staple gun.

For .22LR, get some snap caps. You can use drywall anchors as a cheaper alternative.

In your position, I'd buy:

  • CZ 455, Henry lever-action, or another high quality bolt/lever-action .22LR ($500)
  • bipod, sling, bag, cleaning rod+patches, trigger lock, staple gun, ear/eye protection, small lockable metal ammo box ($300, more or less depending on your tastes)
  • range membership ($200-$400)
  • a couple thousand rounds of ammo, various types ($200)

That leaves enough for a decent low-power scope but you may want to hold off on that purchase, because buying optics is insanely complicated and mistakes are expensive.

Note that you can't really trigger lock a lever-action; get something like this instead, to lock the lever.

I've taken lots of overnight trains, in Europe and beyond, and never been robbed. On actual sleeper trains I try to book the bottom bed, which often has a top-loading storage cabinet underneath it. Someone would literally have to lift your body into the air to get to your pack. Otherwise, I keep my absolute-valuables in a small purse that I wrap around my arm and keep on the wall side of my body. If I can't store my pack under my bed then I try to secure it to something using a cable lock, which reduces the possibility of a "crime of opportunity".
