If you are willing to look at used machines, you can often find Riccars, Sebos, and Mieles within your price range. If the thought of using someone else's vacuum in your house turns you off, Panasonic makes good vacuums for under $300. The vacuum in your picture is known as a canister, and works beast on hard floors. If you have carpet, I'd recommend this Panasonic Canister.
Do not buy that dyson then. It only has turbine head which would be useless on your carpeting unless its indoor/outdoor carpet.

I have the MC-CG902. Mine wasn't $1100 either, I paid $189.
I live in a large-ish studio apartment that's 80% carpet. Is this panasonic overkill? Should I go with a Eureka Mighty Mite?
