After his last AMA last year I also went out and bought a Panasonic bagged canister vacuum. I got the Panasonic MC-CG917.
EDIT: I definitely did not pay $1k for it... lol. I think it was about $250.
Just from my personal experience, I have been using this one for the past 6 months and it works great so far. I have a two story home, no pets, half carpet, half hardwood floors. If you don't mind a bagged canister vacuum - Panasonic MC-CG917

Aside from his constant recommendations for Miele and Riccar, he does also recommend the higher end Panasonic canisters a few times for people that absolutely can't spend $800+. I got the MC-CG917 for $169 from Warehouse Deals in the new and used section (it's still Amazon, but returned items and such). It was brand new with everything, but the box was torn a little bit.
Amazing vacuum. Looks like it's the most expensive it's been for a long time, but it has regularly dropped below $200.
If anyone does decide to go this way, the brand name bags are $9/bag while these are $1.20/ bag. They work perfectly, so no reason to get brand name.
Since you have a good budget I'm just going to link some quality vacuums. Ill point out a few important things about each vacuum.
1 This upright has more suction than most vacuums. It has a bare floor setting, a Hepa Filter, 14 Inch Cleaning Path, a 40 Foot cord, and a thermal reset switch. I rarely have any of these come back to my store and if they do it's usually user error. This unit is also designed to be their "Quiet Force" vacuum. I can vouch for that. It truly is a quiet vacuum. It's a nice feature if you can only vacuum at night while the kids are asleep. I do have to warn you that the back piece is just a tad weak on this unit because of all the weight the put into the head. However, this wont be a problem if you take care of your vacuums. And even if it does break the head will just droop down but it won't effect the vacuuming. 2 This is the canister version of the upright panasonic in #1. They really have the same features but this isn't a "quiet force." However, you can turn the strength of the suction down on the hose so I guess that counts as making it quiet. This canister has a 24 foot cord/cord reel, telescopic wand, Hepa filter, and a 12 inch cleaning path. Don't be fooled by the price on this one either. Panasonic sells this for $500 on their website. They just made some deal with amazon I guess.... My cost to purchase this vacuum for resale is higher than what they sell it for :(

3 The sebo felix is a good option too. Just know that if you have to get it repaired almost all of the parts will be "special order."

For a cheaper vacuum cleaner Panasonic is great. Bagged vacuum cleaners will last longer and clean better. I just upgraded to a Panasonic bagged vacuum cleaner from a Panasonic bagless one and it was a huge difference. It picked up a lot even after I had used the bagless two days before. I just moved into a home where the previous owner had dogs. First thing I did was vacuum the living room, and after my first run the bag got halfway filled with dog hair! I was amazed, and the bag is actually bigger than it looks. The powered brush can be turned off to suck and it's worked great on my laminate and wood floors. And the little attachment with the brush on it works great for my stairs and tight, small spaces. Haven't tried the other attachments yet but they fit right inside the canister nicely. And it came with two HEPA bags! So far it's an amazing vacuum. Only downsides are it looks a bit bigger than the Miele's and it's not overly loud but noisy, which are both very minor things to me.
My Dyson just died, and after reading your AMAs I'm probably not going to get another.
I have a lot of hardwood on the 1st floor and all carpet on the stairs/second floor. I know you've recommended Panasonic canister vacs in the past, what do you think about this one? :
