Parenting with Love and Logic
My eldest was a somewhat willful child when she was young, always ready to argue her point. This book was essential in raising her. Her younger sister is more easy-going, but has a strong BS meter, and this works for her, too.
I read a bunch of books on raising a child when our eldest was born, and this has proven to be the best.
My wife is currently reading Love and Logic. It has a bunch of good ideas (and a few ones that we're skeptical of.
The one I like most so far is inflation of consequences, ie, that natural consequences get worse as kids get older so it's important to let them learn from mistakes when they are young, instead of sheltering them until they are in college when they can really screw up bigtime. If you teach your five year old the negative consequences of debt by "repossessing" a toy when they don't pay you back the 25 cents you lent them for candy, it's much less damaging then when they learn the same lesson as a college student and lose a car, or worse. It has a bunch of other good ideas, too. Definitely worth reading.
One star? Really? Which book did you get? There are a lot of them in the series. I've only read this one: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0891093117/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_D.0IwbDM6B2VE and the one specific to toddlers.
