Battle 2 is dope if you can go $6 over budget. And most importantly it would look cool with green I think

Ahh yeah definitely a Battle II in the 2000-3000 range then. That'll handle just about everything you'd run into freshwater and some lighter salt/brackish water as well. If you end up surf/pier/deep sea/or trophy striper fishing you'd want a more specific use rig for that anyway, so this size will be the most versatile for now, and then if you need a big rig you can buy that later but won't be way overkill for everything else. My choice for overall use would be a Battle II 2500 which will run about 80 bucks, and a Ugly Stik Elite 7' Medium action which is 50 bucks. That is what I was catching large mouth bass on this past weekend actually... I picked up the 2 piece version of the rod for easier travel. I use Stren original 10lb mono line with it most of the time, although if you're fishing heavy cover/snags or going for larger fish 20lb braid might be a good option. The GX2 version of the Ugly Stick is fine as well, but the Elite is worth the extra couple of bucks to me as it's lighter with what I think is a better feel. Both are really commonly sold so I would play with both in a store and see what you prefer. Here's the two I'm talking about. Amazon has a decent price on the reel, rod is the same price everywhere.
