Yeah, the noise in my dog's case was excitement and frustration. You can wait it out and ignore it, and the excitement will (in theory, over time) subside and he'll be less excited by default when you arrive home. This does usually work, but takes a while when there's a strong history of noise. My neighbors would have had me evicted in the meantime.

So, I chose the opposite route. Channel the excitement and get rid of the frustration altogether. Giving her a way (sit) to immediately cause the greeting to happen removed the frustration of wanting to greet. The treat chasing game channeled the excitement so it wasn't directed at me.

Over time I gradually faded out the treat chasing game and kept up the sit-to-greet ritual, and now she behaves like a normal dog. Wiggles, maybe whines once, then backs up and sits, waiting for me to bring my face into sniffing range.

BTW, if you're not sure about food motivation and still want to try it, small, round, stinky, soft treats work best. Zukes mini naturals or cardinal labs are usually safe bets. Many dogs don't eat treats from your hand when they're excited, but most do chase and gulp down food rolling and bumping across the floor.

Best way to keep your dog mentally stimulated is find a nice, moist, small training treat and get to work on some commands. Google a few you'd like to teach her. These are the treats that I find most dogs cannot resist!

I had a clicker for a little while, but then I lost it and never replaced it. She picks up on things so quickly, it doesn't seem to matter how I reward her.
