I wish things like this worked for my dog! He has no desire to work for anything - he won't even work to get the good stuff out of his Kong. The only thing I found that he'll actually work for is this toy, but it has to be pretty far open. Lazy! (I'm lucky though - he has no separation anxiety issues.)

Mine recently started doing this and also started basically asking my permission to eat, which was kind of weird. I also occasionally feed him table scraps but not enough to make him turn down food. The Twist n' Treat has made dinner time fun for him and gotten him in the mood to eat. Try that with some kibble if and if he doesn't respond maybe try throwing some treats in there and scaling them back until mealtime is fun for him.

Disclaimer: I'm still navigating this new territory as well, this is just stuff we've done recently that's worked so far.

Ya our hound dog can really destroy shit-at first we would buy toys, give it to him, and maybe start making dinner. then we would look over and he's eaten half of a plastic toy!!! Then we worry about him eating plastic.... he's seemingly uninterested in toys that DON'T get destroyed at his chewing (like antlers)!

Some toys we've found helpful: stuffed animals at thrift shops, so he can rip them to shreds without me crying because it was expensive, the burlap sack toys (they are made w/ burlap sack material-and are super durable!) the twist and shout for kibble, but it can't just be left around when there isn't food in it, and CARROTS! We give him a huge carrot every other day-and not only is it great for his teeth and full of fiber, but he gets to destroy and eat it.

But ya-if he's acting wacky one night, we'll do like 5-8 rounds of sniff sniff, with the last round being a carrot or a piece of rawhide, or a real hard kong and then he's able to calmly lay down while I do some work or pay bills or whatever. Sometimes, its annoying to be like 'ok, i guess i'll put everything to the side and entertain my dog for 30 minutes...' but you get used to it and it not only leads to a good bond between you two, but then he's actually able to leave you alone so that you can get your shit done in peace knowing he's happy.

Have you tried any food reward toys? I got this for my golden girl. She hasn't come home from the breeder yet but I've had great success with it when I used it with a few rescue dogs I was dogsitting.

Food/treat cube

And it's not just a hallow cube, it has different grooves and sections so a dog can't just flip it over and send everything rolling out.

Other odd shapes are also available
