I hear you dude. Addiction is very much a disease. (See this great film) People aren't stigmatized for having heart disease, but we get shit on because people don't understand the nature of drug addiction. The film I linked explains it well. But people on the outside see drug addiction as a choice, whereas it is anything but. I wish everyone would be forced to see the film I linked, it would make the world a better place. (Sorry if it sounds like I'm shilling it, I just think it's a great film for explaining the disease of addiction. It certainly isn't a masterpiece though, it is cheesy at times.)
It's not what you say, it's what you do. He's going through hell - a hell you can't really understand if you're not an addict. Just be there for him. Go to some meetings with him. check in on him. Give him a hug. Go to a movie or something with him- show him that he can still have a good time in sobriety. If you want to gain a bit of understanding into what he's going through, watch or read Pleasure Unwoven, a good documentary explaining addiction

Also, this video is amazingly educational although it can feel a bit cheesy at times. The whole video can be found at Amazon and I highly recommend any person struggling with addiction watch it and just learn what Dr. McCauley is teaching us about what he discovered.
There is also another video he makes called "Pleasure Unwoven" where he goes deeper into addiction and also how the United States Navy Pilots treat it and how addicts can use that model to help themselves stop from relapsing. Really powerful.
