Hey all, I just wanted to report something.


I've been testing the assortment of cables I had around, and extensions.


Using this cable, this extension, and this PCIe Card I was able to get a 32 foot + 10 foot setup running fine. I tested it without the extension and could not see a difference in latency.
It does require active power.


Your results may vary, but I figured i'd share my test.

33 ft (10m) extension cables. The USB cable has to be powered for that length. The HDMI needs to be fiber to not have signal loss. You also need a female-to-female display port adapter. I used the following:

For extension cabling:

I use a 30-foot fiber DisplayPort cable ($100) with a connector ($10) and a 30-foot powered USB extender cable ($40).

It's a pricy solution but it works perfectly.

Since I had some issues I needed a HDMI repeater, so I bought the below. Passive to 20m, above 20m you plug in the USB adaptor to it to power it, making it active until 35m.

Because I had the above setup, i needed an additional Male to Male HDMI adaptor, but couldn't find one capable of 4k for cheap so I bought the below which worked fine with the above cable setup.

Now here's where i get less helpful, but making safe assumptions. Because I used the above cable at 0.5m, it should also work at 10m with the repeater, so I suggest buying the below HDMI with above repeater.

Now here's where I'm completely guessing, but on the above wiki (NOTE I HAVEN'T USED THIS) they have: Plugable USB3-10M*, below link to it on Amazon.com.au (you might be able to find it cheaper elsewhere, I didn't shop around).

The main thing to note when buying anything for your rift is to make sure its 4k compatible, so USB 3.0, HDMI 2.0, and it all says it can do 4k.

I've got a 1080 as well! It runs just fine for me.

It's actually surprisingly simple once you have the cables. Active USB 3.0 andFiber optic displayport were what I used.

Once everything's plugged in, it runs the same as if you didn't have the extenders. The Steam Link has an actual VR mode built in. So I start VR first, then start the Steam Link, connect to the VR PC, and it starts mirroring the headset right away!

Edit 2: oh also you will need a male to male coupler for the displayport cable: like this one

Haven't even bought it yet. Waiting for an $80 black friday discount.

Although, I think i'm going to plow ahead anyways. Noticed this ridiculous thing in the FAQ, and figured maybe i'll give it a try. I'm keeping my expectations at Wkeam's suggested level. But worst case i'll just have to rip a door off its hinges and move my computer.

Can't speak from experience but seems the biggest issue most people have is just the power component. Found this USB on Amazon that says it's been tested with a few headsets, then this HDMI repeater to boost the HDMI side, just need a cable for it as well. Like I said, haven't tried any of this myself, but Amazon returns are easy enough to be worth a shot if I was in your situation since they do flat out say VR headset names in the descriptions of each.

I use it for one of my rear sensors in my 4 sensor setup. I don't even need to use a 12v insertion power supply with it

Works like a charm with my Index (tested all the way up to 144Hz) and I used the following:

Though I went with the 50' option when it was still available, anything with the same specs should work. Tried another cable that was DP 1.2 and it worked as well

Any others I don't know if it will work or cant account for but these particular ones I got in work every time. Mileage may vary it took me 3 cables to get it right.
