Plugable USB Universal Fast 1A Charge-Only Adapter for Android, Apple iOS, and Windows Mobile Devices
The Plugable 'USB-MC1' adapter enables you to turn any USB data port in to a charge-only port. This can be advantageous as some devices charge too slowly or do not charge when connected to a USB data port. It also serves to protect your device and its data from hackers and viruses. The MC1 is smaller than a pack of chewing gum and will easily fit in your pocket. Perfect for on the go charging at airports, coffee shops, libraries, and more.Don't risk your device and data by charging unprotected on an unknown and unsecure USB port. Our MC1 acts as a USB port 'firewall'. It isolates your device from the USB data so it cannot enter data transfer mode. With the MC1 there is no risk of hacking/viruses when charging as only the 5V power is allowed through the USB port. Protect your data, identity, and device by keeping hackers and unwanted data access while charging (known as 'juice jacking') out.Adapter simulates an Apple 1A charger signal (nearly all USB devices on the market are capable of charging from this signal as it has become the unofficial standard for USB charging).Computer USB ports and many other stand alone chargers will only charge devices at 500mA (.5A) with a normal data cable, this adapters allows charging at 1A or more - twice as fast! Adapter also allows supported devices to charge on most powered USB hubs even when the computer is off or not connected.Battery charging over USB has become a standard practice but the actual charging behavior of different devices is often unpredictable and sometimes disappointing. Read the description below for more background information and if this is the right adapter for you.

People really shouldn't be plugging their phone's USB into strange ports without a condom.

u/epsiblivion · 25 pointsr/Android

that's why you use a usb condom

u/ByGollie · 12 pointsr/sysadmin

here's something from the opposite direction - it stops 'juice jacking' - where a compromised USB charger plug can take over your smartphone whilst charging

Basically - it's a filter so that only a current will ass through the cable

Like this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Plugable-Universal-Charge-Only-Adapter-Android-Black/dp/B00FA9GXKM/

It's a little dongle that only connects the power pins and leaves the data one isolated.

Amazon has them:

Plugable USB Universal Fast 1A Charge-Only Adapter for Android, Apple iOS, and Windows Mobile Devices https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FA9GXKM/

PortaPow Data Blocker USB Adaptor with SmartCharge https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00QRRZ2QM/

u/wabudd1 · 6 pointsr/whatisthisthing

This looks like a similar form factor to a USB condom I have:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FA9GXKM/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_N8mYDbQB1BB6C

Unless it's otherwise marked, there are only two ways to know for sure: Plug it in or take it apart.

u/jakegh · 3 pointsr/nyc

I agree. Just get one of these. It blocks all data.

Perhaps a bit. The only reason I mentioned SyncStop is that it's the most well-known of these types of devices. Other brands are available, including PortaPow and Plugable. Additionally, you could always simply make your own.

A basic step, if you're concerned, is to get a power-only USB or Lighting cable; or a "USB condom".

https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Universal-Charge-Only-Adapter-Android/dp/B00FA9GXKM/

I think it's pretty unlikely that mass-produced battery packs include tracking/location/wireless tech - it would add to the cost of the device, reduce the power available, and provide very little information, most of the time (because cell phones are already tiny always-on location/wireless devices we carry with us all over the place).

On the other hand, intelligence agencies are known to interdict hardware ordered by parties of interest and install surveillance tech in just that specific device:

https://www.theverge.com/2013/12/29/5253226/nsa-cia-fbi-laptop-usb-plant-spy

If you're concerned about that, buy your device in person with cash - or have someone even less interesting than you buy it for you.

You could also look for one that's easy to disassemble, then open it up and see if there's any circuits that don't seem relevant to charging/discharging the battery.

Or you are getting your data jacked... Remember, always use a USB condom.

Are you just after additional power from the USB sockets? If so, trying a power only cable may work - from my reading this ought to negotiate with your device (i.e. iPhone) by spoofing a dedicated charging unit, so that the maximum 1A is drawn. From other forum posts it seems that the port can provide up to 1A in a power only mode. This improves charging, but obv. won't be as good as a 2A option - also caveat emptor - I only think this will work ;-). http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00FA9GXKM?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_awd_2J5XwbW54QPM7

u/syngamer · 2 pointsr/mazda3

Would this work? It says the power source needs to be at least 1A, which I don't think the Mazda has/supports:

That's where something like the USB Condom comes in. I carry this one, mainly because bare PCBs scare the TSA up-feelers, but also because it fakes 1amp charging on my laptop.

Hey! I can answer this!

Apple implemented some weird charging "hand shaking" that has to go on between the device and charger on all of their devices made around the time of the iPod Classic:

https://learn.adafruit.com/minty-boost/icharging

To get around this, I got a special adapter:

https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Universal-Charge-Only-Adapter-Android/dp/B00FA9GXKM/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1501463042&sr=8-2-fkmr1&keywords=plugable+ipod+classic

This is the "Plugable USB Universal Fast 1A Charge-Only Adapter for Android, Apple iOS, and Windows Mobile Devices" for anyone that wants to find it outside of Amazon. This dongle "fakes" that handshake and lets you use pretty much any charger you want. I got one of these when I found myself in the same position and couldn't find ANYTHING about it online specifically regarding the iPod Classic. I can vouch for this adapter to work. Hope this helps!

There are USB tether cables out there that leave the data pins open, preventing the device from trying to network with the host. That may stop your TV from complaining about the unsupported USB device.

I have no experience with this device, it's just what Google gave me and seems to be highly rated: amzn.com/B00FA9GXKM

Found this on Amazon Plugable it converts that data usb to a charger

Huh, never heard of those! But a quick google turned up this - http://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Universal-Charge-Only-Adapter-Android/dp/B00FA9GXKM/ref=pd_sxp_grid_pt_2_1 - different brand but looks virtually identical :) I think you've cracked it!

u/ThatGuy67 · 1 pointr/technology

Since USB can transport data as well, could this lead to someone reading from all the devices you are plugging into the power grid?

That "USB condom" market is going to explode...

You would probably want a dongle like this and not a cable. Be warned that they won't work very well on some devices. I forget the actual technical reason but something about the USB specification will make it charge really really slowly on some phones.

u/7trXMk6Z · 1 pointr/privacy

probably OK, but if you're worried you can pick up something like this, which are often referred to as "usb condoms". they actually manually strip the data connection part and force it to be truly charge-only. (usb's have 4 pins, two for data two for charging, and this just doesn't connect the two data pins)

u/xDrive4MaticQuattro · 1 pointr/mazda

There has been some discussion on this. It seems that USB power + data limits power to 0.5 A but power only connections receive 1 A.

I think people have bought charge-only cables/adapters to make this work.

I'd link the discussion but I'm on mobile and too lazy

Does this do the same thing?

It says "does not support or allow any data transfer through the adapter"..
