RaspberryPi is pretty bad when it comes to being a fileserver (wonder how much throughput you get). It is because the network port adapted off of the USB, so transferring files from a USB hard-disk, you are potentailly halving the USB bandwidth.

I'd suspect even a PogoPlug (with ArchLinux, original firmware is useless), should be better.

Cheapest option

This one has USB3, SATA and couple of more USB2 port.

If all you need is a low wattage head to mine with, you might also consider going with a pogoplug. Your whole setup could cost less than $60.

Hey binsky89,
I just grabbed one of the older pogoplug models. Though the newer model is actually a bit cheaper now. They will run arch or debian right out of the box. You also get ssh access to the pogoplug with the default linux distro. The pogoplug service is great if you don't need more than one account, but you'll have to pay if you want more accounts to be able to access those files.

newer model:

Not much better suited for the price point. $40 for a model B Pi is hard to beat. audio streaming isn't very intensive, so you should be fine.

Now if you were wanting to do video streaming and possibly transcoding on the fly...I'd recommend something quite a bit more beefy.

Edit: if you crazy/think you can skirt with 128 MB of RAM, you might look into the $11 PogoPlug, as people have found ways to sideload both Arch Linux ARM and Debian on the thing. the downside is a small chance of bricking it, and it cannot boot from SD card, only from either the SATA port or from USB. this limits its portability.
