I would recommend the polar FT7 heart rate watch with strap. I have been using it since last summer and have never had a problem with it on the erg or water. Here is a link to where I bought it from, for some reason the price changes with the color options(?).

I love it. It's not too chunky on my wrist. The only problem with it and I think you would run into this with any wrist worn HRM is that when I do Thrusters or anything that requires me to bend my wrists (front rack position) I sometimes turn off the monitoring because my wrist bends back and hits the off button on the side.

This is the best advice. I've had my polar for around 5 years now, it doesn't do some of the fancy stuff the new ones do, but it does what I need it to do.
