I recommend a book on this subject that I found well worth the read. This author sees fast reactors as the answer to most of the drawbacks to nuclear power.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone on reddit has read this book and what they think.

Tom Blees advocated this idea in his book Prescription for the Planet, which is mainly about the Integral Fast Reactor.

Energy density is actually better than liquid fuels. His thought was to use fuel that only burns in pure oxygen, which adds complexity but on the other hand you can stockpile fuel in your back seat or garage with no worries.

So the basic idea was, pick up the fuel, burn it in your car, then ship it back to the producer, who uses the process heat from an IFR to get rid of the oxygen and hence recycle it. Blees calculated that even including shipping cost both directions, it'd only be about 50 cents for an amount equivalent to a gallon of gasoline.
