Musk's got a long way to go to make that happen. SpaceX hasn't even put a man into orbit yet, and he's talking about something even more ambitious than Von Braun's Project MARS.

There's a lot of technology that needs to be developed before humans can live long-term on Mars. I think that Antarctica could serve as a good testing ground for some of that technology. A self-sustaining colony in Antarctica would make Mars a lower hurdle to jump, and it would bring about inventions that will be useful to people all over Earth.
